Title: Danny Makkelie - Sparta Rotterdam v FC Groningen
Post by: bmb on Sun 18 Sep 2022 00:57
Couple of incidents in his game today. First half he disallowed a goal for offside. Could also easily have been disallowed for handball, but the offside came first so that took priority. VAR took an absolute age - I think he was having trouble with the crayons and getting the correct shot to draw the lines on! The handball was only really obvious from the camera behind the goal. Correct call to disallow.

He gave a penalty in the 87th min reckless tackle, well attempted tackle to be more precise. Attacker jumped over the defender and there was some contact around the knee. Had he have made contact fully then it would have been a red card for the defender and the attacker would more than likely be in the hospital now and out for the season! In some ways it looked soft on first viewing because the attacker looked to have managed to jump over the defender with no contact. Replays from one angle in particular, showed the contact that there was clearly, and also how much damage would have probably been caused to the attacker if he hadn't have jumped. VAR sent him over for an OFR and he quite rightly stuck to his decision. Another big call correct and I'm not sure the VAR should have intervened really. Glad Danny has the strength (if that's the right word) to say to the VAR nope I was right and I'm sticking with my call.

The biggest thing from it was that they interviewed him after the game and he explained the decision.  I don't speak Dutch but I was watching with my lovely Dutch lady friend who told me he said something like: reckless tackle, high leg unnecessary action by defender, if he doesn’t jump he could be injured, contact is light though but enough to be out of balance. I was gobsmacked by him being interviewed! Shows it can happen if done right. It was quite funny, as he was saying about it being an unnecessary action by the defender a hand appeared and gave him a playful push - few smiles all round and it was revealed it was the defender who had done it. You could hear him laugh but only saw his hand.  The losing manager said it was a correct call and that it was stupid on the part of the defender, also refreshing to hear.

Well done Danny, another superb performance.

That Dutch lady didn’t expect a topic about this game 😁

István and Danny are my favorite referees, by miles (bmb raised me very well). I’m probably more nervous before their international games than the guys themselves 😂

Let’s agree on one thing: I don’t want to read their names in the press (in a negative context) anymore until, let’s say… Christmas? 😊 In 2022, especially Danny had a few in my opinion, great (!) calls in his UEFA Champions League games, and I defended him on many occasions. A few calls generated media attention, because it ended up being a disadvantage to the “whining” losing side (with a lack of self-reflection…)

Compare that to Clément Turpin, who disallowed a RMA goal in the Champions League final, which was controversial, however nobody’s talking about it because RMA won the final. Imo Danny has been a bit unlucky(?) from this perspective, but hey, this is inherent part of the referee job and he is truly a brilliant one 💪🏻

I do hope and pray that the negativity in (local) press is over now for a while! It’s not good for my well-being ;)
