Title: Suspensions for cup competitions
Post by: Skydank on Thu 13 Dec 2018 22:26
A Peterborough player was cautioned in the FA Cup first round and after a booking in the second round replay will now apparently miss the third round match

Can anybody confirm that 2 yellows in 2 different games leads to the same punishment as 2 yellows in the same game ie missing the next match?

Yes, it changed the season to make on-field disciplinary elements competition specific. It’s explained on the FA website:

This Season will see the addition of Competition Specific Sanctioning for yellow cards in the following Competitions:
Premier League, English Football League, National League, FA Challenge Cup, EFL Cup, FA Trophy
(Please note Discipline in the EFL Trophy is Competition specific for all Discipline and remains unchanged from last season).
Therefore, the accumulation of 5/10/15 Yellow cards in the table above apply only to League matches. The remaining
Competitions will carry suspensions in those Competitions only when a player has received 2 yellow cards in that Competition.
The FA will release separately the cut off points for each of the Competitions as part of the Competition notifications.
Dismissals remain unaffected and apply the same as last season.

I can see the logic behind the decision, but think that 2 cautions before suspension is a bit draconian considering that replays etc mean some players have a higher risk of commiting offences.

Perhaps 3 cautions would be better?

It will be interesting to see what happens if a big name player falls foul of this rule.

It's the same as the Champions League format, in which teams potentially play more matches - I'm not sure at what point yellow cards are wiped for that?

Not a problem for either of my teams as it requires them to play more than two Cup matches.
