UEFA Delegate: Loukás Siótropos (GRE)
UEFA Referee Liaison Officer: Sanjar Ysqaqov (KAZ)
Decent first half. The game itself is typical pre-season rustiness and neither team match fit. He's been quite strict but fair and consistent with both teams. Good movement around the pitch, fitness good. Had a couple of chats with players from both teams who seem to be liking and respecting him. One situation where a few handbags were thrown - foul by Tobol and one of their players tried to lift up the Fradi player, pulling at his shirt that started off some silliness. I'd not mess with Mr Bel as he dragged a player back away from another and shoved him out of the way! Not sure it's the most advisable technique but he got away with it.

Banks off of his game - that team replaced by a team from Romania.

Edited out - no need for the video in reply post

Oh!
This is what I wrote on the Hungarian website: His international experience seems quite limited and this will only be his 2nd Championship qualifier, having refereed Neftchi Baku v Olympiacos at this stage last season. He has refereed Fradi previously in a Europa League qualifier on 12.07.2018, first round, 1st leg when they drew 1-1 at home to Maccabi Tel Aviv. He has no prior games with any Slovakian teams.
That means I have actually seen him before in the Fradi game but I don't remember him.
I'm not sure that UEFA have quite grasped what a difficult match this is likely to be. They've only met twice, home & away in 92 but there is a high degree of animosity between the nations which spills over into football. Some of the stuff I've seen between the ultras already is well not good shall we say! Most (if not all) Hungarian football supporters will also support FC DAC as they are Hungarian owned, in a region that was Hungarian pre Trianon and is supported by the Hungarians living in Slovakia - over the past few years there have been things like Slovakia banning the Hungarian national anthem, banning Hungary flags, banning Nélküled from being played, banning Hungary shirts, banning Hungarian chants like Ria Ria Hungaria etc. There's a lot of bad feeling! Probably about the only saving grace is Fradi have very few Hungarians in their squad, which might help calm it on the pitch!! I have a press pass for the game.
Just completely, almost unrelated. Nélküled is a song by Ismerős Arcok basically about the 5 million displaced Hungarians being Hungarian where ever they live & is very popular with Hungarians especially those in Slovakia, Romania, Ukraine etc. It was sung at the opening on the new National team stadium so banning from being played at a Hungarian owned team (MOL own FC DAC - they also sponsor our league, our cup etc as our federation president is one of the owners) has only increased animosity.

I hope football wins on the day...

Football is not going to win this game... UEFA fines incoming I am sure.
Fradi fans attacked the Slovan Bratislava coach, smashing a window. District 9 has more riot police than citizens - press received police escorts into the ground and are being guarded by police inside. Fradi ultras the green monsters released a video showing the police brutality in Slovakia in 1992 ahead of the game which has got the whole place fired up. Fradi played Nélküled ahead of kick off and the Slovan ultras turned their back and walked out of the stands. Nélküled was followed by Himnusz, which delayed kick off as the Fradi players stood firm singing it with the fans. The Slovan fans came back in to a chorus of boos and immediately threw smoke bombs and firecrackers into the home crowd.
It's not much better on the pitch, the amount of playacting by both teams is embarrassing. Saponjic given a yellow card on 27 for elbowing - he didn't touch the Fradi player... The ref has fallen for every single bit of it and is getting conned left, right and centre. Penalty shout on 22 for Fradi - ref said no & was correct to do so. Replays showed there was no handball offence. He got the 1 really big call of the 1st half correct. 30mins it all kicked off, Fradi fans pelting the Slovan corner taker with cups and whatever else they could get their hands on, caused a bit of handbags on the pitch, 1 Slovan player trying to con the ref into believing he'd been punched, ref was distracted by other players pushing and shoving each other. He sent a couple of Fradi players to plead with the crowd to calm it and went with them asking them himself to please just stop. He then took the players off the pitch for a drinks break, tactically used to try and calm the crowd & players down. Worked in terms of the players - not so the crowd! Very few pryo's during the game so I assume the police were confiscating them. As I type that - 2nd half delayed due to the pyros!! The ref has sent Dibz to ask the crowd to stop - Slovan's gk is right in front of the pyros.
While he got the big call right, he has been conned by both teams far too much & is missing the niggly tackles.
Need a far stronger & more experienced ref for the return leg.
-
2nd half much better. The Fradi Capo led/kept the fans singing which stopped the shenanigans in the stands. Lots of pyros though 2nd half.
The players of both teams stopped the on pitch stupidity and just on with playing ball - much better to watch. Ref was much better 2nd half - funny anyone would think player bad behaviour directly leads to referee error....
Barseghyan winning goal for Slovan Bratislava was a cracker, he was the player who in the first half who tried to con the ref into believing he had been punched.
-
Thats the problem with Spanish officials, because they fall for it in their own countries because their players are the worst when it comes to this type of thing, they struggle with foul detection.

None whatsoever i don't imagine! Not sure how they were tagged originally as Romanian as they're actually from Moldova! I've corrected the Conference league thread. They would have been Romanian previously pre 1991 - well they'd have been annexed as part of Romania by the USSR to be more correct! Hungary supported their bid for independence, so did Romania on the whole so there's no real historical issues. I hope not anyway as I will be sat in the stand watching!
FC DAC 1904 Dunajská Streda (SVK) - FC FCSB (ROU) on the other hand, might have a few idiots trying to start something...

If thats handball then anytime the ball touches an arm is handball and the game is dead!
What is that player supposed to do?
Bonkers
-
"Bonkers" is putting it mildly. No time to react, arm was not in an "unnatural position" (when moving around at speed the arms do that sometimes).
To cap it off, a yellow card (or - as we used to call it - a caution) is awarded. In the days when referees communicated cautions to players with words (as opposed to cards) we were instructed to warn the offending player that if a second cautionable offence was committed the player would be sent from the field of play. In simple terms, the referee is warning the player not to reoffend. In this case you are warning the player not to get in the way of a ball taking two deflections and hitting the arm. What can the player do? Another nonsense created by chasing the Holy Grail of certainty.
-
That does seem to follow the UEFA/FIFA apparent stance that any contact between hand and ball is handball. Time after time in European/International football you see handballs given where the player has no chance of getting out of the way. And that just encourages teams to try to kick the ball into hands and then appeal wildly, similar to the deliberate attempt to get penalty corners in hockey by playing it against an opponent's foot.
As for the YC, absolutely no idea...

Nice! Think I might well be using my ticket for that one!
Mr del Cerro Grande confirming he obviously does not read RTR as he is wearing THAT colour! He's got quite a scary cross look - never noticed that before! Aside of the rag he is wearing he's been decent thus far. Fradi 1-0 down, deservedly so & perhaps if Laidouni stopped tripping over his own shadow anytime someone is in sneezing range of him & a few of the others remembered they are there to kick the ball in the opposing teams net and not to push their players over they might find a way back into the game...
One sector is closed due to the anti Slovak chanting in the previous round. There is a huge anti racism poster there instead. I have no problem with that but I am annoyed they label it as racism instead of xenophobia. Xenophobia is NO better and is equally as unacceptable but label it as it is. Both clubs were charged - it was anti Slovak/anti Hungarian chants depending on which side but there was no racist behaviour by either club. To be fair to Fradi they as a club have been very vocal, they have stated that sector is an embarrassment to the club and they are glad it is shut because they don't want them there and that they are looking to identify those responsible & will ban them for life. UEFA ordered them to have 1 ant racism banner in the closed sector, they have additionally put anti racism advert in the program, on the website, on their SM accounts and at every entrance. Kubatov has released a video telling them not to come back after the 1 match ban because they are the ones not welcome.
-
Fradi lost 3-1, Qarabağ worthy winners, they were by far the better team. Team ref can be happy with their contribution to the game aside of the kit they wore obviously!

The interesting bit for me is Attwell back as VAR after his long UEFA absence. One final chance for him (and English VARs in general perhaps)?

Technically yes, although back then they were very much referees first. Cant see Wembley being renamed Jack Taylor Stadium.

Cracking game to watch and I think team ref really played their part in ensuring that was the case. The goal was superb. As for Mr Makkelie - positioning was perfect, he doesn't man manage he leads the game and is just so good at it. Decision making fair and consistent to both teams. He is such a great referee to watch. He makes it looks so easy but we all know that is not the case. The 2nd leg is going to be fantastic.
Was was the song by the fans at the end of the game? Loved that. Reminds me of our football in Hungary, we have similar there post match & I love it.

The Tofiq Bahramov Stadium in Baku - the only stadium named after a linesman?
I read recently that Tofiq Bahramov didn't really like running the line; I think he felt it was beneath his dignity. Still, he was the Soviet Union's top referee for a number of years in the late 1960s and the early 1970s and he remains the only official from Azerbaijan to take part in a major tournament, and so I suppose he deserves what is as far I know a unique distinction.

All World Cup match officials were top referees in their own countries for many years (until the specialism of Linesman / Assistant Referee was recognised) so that would make sense. Whether he thought it was beneath his dignity may or may not be true, but the practise did lead to a number of shocking performance by "linesmen" in World Cup games. For many of them, it was a long time since they had wielded a flag in anger .... and it showed.

Intriguing and finely poised game for Taylor et al in Belgrade on the Tuesday!
One of the most hostile & intimidating grounds going. It will be very loud and probably loads of pyros. Last season they put one of their coaches in hospital with a fractured skull as he tried to protect Bognár Tamás and his team leaving the pitch. 2 correct red cards, one for DOGSO & the other a YYR late on in the game & they were pelting them with rocks and all sorts. There was an additional xenophobic element that game as well but in general - they are completely insane!
Been there once and walked the tunnel with the ground virtually empty & that was intimidating enough. My boss took me to a Belgrade derby as a "treat" (he once played for Partizan) - amazing atmosphere but scary.
-
Oh! UEFA decided to schedule two of my favorite referees on the same evening. We need to talk. ;D
I'm missing István though!
They've been good to me with scheduling this week so I guess that means everyone will be in y****w. István will feature in the group stages, he's absolutely fine.

Glad to hear about Istvan! He is in my Top 3 fav's with Lahoz & Makkelie. I want to watch both on Wednesday. Perhaps needs to skip the Rangers-game. It's too much :p
What's your schedule?
-
I think at least Makkelie wont wear y****w, because the Trapzonspor GK wore a y****w kit in the first leg. Or do GKs switch a lot? Michael Oliver wore red in the first leg.
Same applies to the Crvena Zvezda GK (Taylor's game). GK wore y****w kit in 1st leg.
In all other UCL games, the y****w is available, so I'm going to mentally prepare myself for the worst.
-
I think at least Makkelie wont wear y****w,
He'll be in red!
What's your schedule?
My schedule this week:
Today: Mezőkövesd Zsóry v DVSC - József Erdős
Tues: Crvena Zvezda - Maccabi Haifa - Anthony Tyalor
Weds: Trabzonspor - Copenhagen - Danny Makkelie & will probably have Dinamo Zagreb - Bodř/Glimt - Antonio Miguel Mateu Lahoz 1st leg was a fantastic game
Thurs: MOL Fehérvár FC - 1. FC Köln - Ali Palabıyık. Hajrá Vidi!! Shamrock Rovers - Ferencvárosi - François Letexier. Hajrá Fradi.
Fri - Sun: 6 NBI games, hopefully a Liga 1 game, hopefully a Fortuna Liga game, hopefully an Eredivisie game & hopefully an Albanian Supaliga game. Oh and possibly the AFCB game as well.

I have no idea! I watch Enea Jorgji's games when I can. I wouldn't know 1 team from the other. I've watched Milos Kerkez play from U17 to now the U21 teams though. Decent prospect.

He was indeed in red. Outstanding performance from team ref in a very difficult game.
Imo a missed yellow for a white player for a snidely studs up kick out when on the floor. Blind side of ref, AR was watching other things. I suspect VAR will have reviewed it but as a YC offence couldnt intervene. He has a cross look that would even make me behave!! Cute smile on 66 when he got hit by the ball. Players smiling with him and clearly liked and respected him. Dealt with flash points well and got the game well under control. Couple of great calls from both ARs. Team ref can go home very proud of themselves 👏

He needs to smile more! He comes across as a very professional and determined guy who wants to reach his goals. Very passionate about refereeing! I love that. Sometimes I do think: dont forget to enjoy. And show us that joy and passion on the pitch, cause in 5-6 years his career could be over. Enjoy the moment :)

I agree. He has a lovely smile when we get to see it! It matches his lovely personality. He's very passionate abut refereeing and he does (or at least did do) coaching for the KNVB. Can you imagine how inspiring that must be to young up coming referees to have him turning up to a training session? He's also one who will reach out to a fellow referee after a bad error to check in on them and provide them a listening ear & some support. I guess though he gets a lot of games that are very intense, like last night, noisy hostile/intimidating crowd, all to play for for both teams so maybe it makes it hard to be more smiley! You can see in his interactions with players there are a few smiles as he keeps it calm along with a scary cross look when they overstep! It's not easy to make it to the top, you have to be very determined and it's also not easy to stay there. Every outstanding performance will put pressure on him to keep performing at that level and with that same high accuracy and he does so consistently. Phenomenal referee to watch, imo.

Im glad that István is back! 😍
-
It doesn't seem to bode too well that Taylor doesn't have English VARs for his game. I seem to remember Attwell wasn't trusted so much seemingly by UEFA towards end of last season and it seems Kavanagh didn't enjoy the best women's Euros either.
I wonder if someone else will get the chance to represent England in UEFA VAR role soon, maybe England?
(As in Darren, if that doesn't make sense!)

Taylor with the stand out match. The majority of the ties have important observers, and the atmosphere at Celtic Park could be a good test for Scharer.

Del Cerro Grande had the same game just at anfield in 19/20. He had a good game then, hoping for the same.

Actually that would be his 3rd CL GS appointment. He had 2 last year. He is definitely Elite material.

Where do we see Collum this season edy? Im sure he will get an appointment but UEFA clearly doesnt think that he is deserving of top games.

It's interesting English vars are back out this round perhaps though with a less significant game, although Atletico are always difficult to officiate. Jovanovic and Scharer with a second game so early is a surprise, but probably highlights the lack of depth in the elite level at the minute. Makkelie with a top game in Munich is no surprise.
-
Barcas away kit is yellow, isnt it? 😁
Would be a big bonus if Danny cant wear yellow in München. He wore the yellow Nike kit in 2nd league last Friday and it hurt my eyes.
-
Makkelie was a lock for the Bayern game.
Lahoz and his match are now on the Wednesday rather than the Tuesday.
Scharer with an important observer in Plzen. He seemed to do well in the couldron of Celtic Park in the first cluster of games.
Interesting that Irrati is demoted to AVAR after the shambles last time out, although how he keeps getting appointments is a mystery.

Some considerations (a bit more serious this time) 😉
Nice to see Oliver with ATM. After Spain-Portugal (Nations League) another game that could be a heated one, with some players that always put pressure on the referee.
Lahoz is a great referee. Top 5🔝 imo. I dont think this game really needs him.
Makkelie seems to be trusted a lot with games that have a story and/or are sensitive in some way. To sum up:
- PSG - Basaksehir (Racism incident)
- Real Madrid - Chelsea (shortly after the Super League announcements & Spanish press putting pressure on the referee team
- Opening game EURO (big responsibility)
- Real Madrid - PSG (Real Madrid very angry after the 1st draw went wrong);
- Scotland - Ukraine
- And now Bayern - Barca, 1st meeting in Champions League after that 8-2 humiliation (?), the Lewa transfer saga.
The guy should have some balls of steel to keep his head cool under such pressure. Hopefully no crazy presidents this time. 😞

Appointments are out for all matches apart from the Copenhagen vs Sevilla game where Stuart Atwell is VAR and Chris Kavanagh as AVAR, can I correctly assume Mr Pawson will get his UCL debut?
Glenn Nyberg gets his debut and I think Maurizio Mariani gets his as well

1. Won't be an English ref as they are in Man City group. Could be a Scottish ref as they sometimes work with english referees. They can also work with other referees.
2. Craig Pawson has already had his UCL debut in Monaco vs Dortmund in 2018

The AVAR on Tuesday is VAR on Wednesday (and vice versa).
Peljto seems to be last minute replacement (Collum?)
Manchester City with another Italian. Napoli another Spaniard. Bad management?

No just a lack of other available games for Spaniards and Italians

Important observers for Mariani and Nyberg on CL debuts.
Italian refereeing is still massively under cooked in the elite ranks, is Mariani of the desired quality for success?
-
As discussed, is it correct that referees aren't normally appointed to a game in the same group as a team from their country? I have a feeling that might be the case, aside from instances near the end of a group stage where for instance the team in question has already won the group/been knocked out and so the other game doesn't impact on them.
If that's the case, it's perhaps a bit of a surprise the same is not applied to VARs.

Interesting that Irrati is demoted to AVAR after the shambles last time out, although how he keeps getting appointments is a mystery.
I am continually amused by the amount of vituperation that poor old Massimiliano Irrati comes in for here. Every time I watch a game on Italian TV and Irrati happens to be serving as the video assistant referee, the commentators make a point of saying that he is universally regarded as the best VARista in the world. Given the appointments that he does indeed keep receiving, could it be a case of everybody being out of step except this forum?

He was VAR in the world cup final remember. I think by Italian refereeing standards he is the best. Hernandez Hernandez is regarded as the best VARista in the world in Spain. But he has been pretty incompetent in UEFA games. Personally Tomasz Kwiatkowski seems to be the best.

If VARista is not an official term, then it bl00dy well should be !!!
-

There's a few that fall into this 'category' - can't do right for love nor money around here but get praised elsewhere. Personal preference and bias certainly comes into play in relation to some names!
-
Just picked up on a dreadful decision by Michael Oliver, supported by VAR Chris Kavanagh, to deny Athletico Madrid a penalty for handball in the first half of the game at Bayer Leverkusen, a game which BL won 2-0 with two late goals. We've been talking recently about 'Champions League' penalties in the PL. Well this was a decision which a park referee would have been hard put to get wrong, with the hand out away from the body and a header from some distance away clearly making contact with the hand. Michael looked really flustered immediately afterwards and he had good reason to as well!

Surprised by the group A appointments, Wouldve thought Letexier and Turpin wouldve been swapped around, Nevertheless huge test for Letexier. Dabanovoc Handed a CL debut with Rosetti Observing.
Taylor possibly a replacement in Porto? Not sure why hes being observed by Vassaras, Unless hes inline for something big this season.

Hmmm yes, and two English refs for B.Leverkusen in a row.

I think they were always going to go with a big hitter at Anfield given the tie.
As mentioned, Dabanovic on debut with Rosetti as observer. Following on from being observed by Rizzoli it seems he is heading for elite.
Taylor is clearly a replacement for someone. He doesnt need Vassaras as observer.

Isnt the derby game in Scotland supposed to be more challenging, given the good home/ bad away record of Rangers?
Frankly, Im also a bit surprised by Turpin in Liverpool and Letexier in Amsterdam. The Adam game is normally supposed to be the tighter and challenging game (incl. hotheads, theatrics and a few troublemakers) 😉

Whilst the game in anfield may attract more media buzz, the game in Amsterdam will be a lot tighter and more difficult to officiate imo. Will probaby be Very crucial to group standings.

No way the game at Anfield needs Turpin. The game in Amsterdam will be mouth tougher. Liverpool are an easy team to referee really.
Compounded by the poor reputation in recent times of England/English teams with Turpin as well it doesnt make much sense.

I had the impression that Turpin has been blatantly protected in 2022. Before that UCL final, after the UCL final.
Hes appointed to good games, but never the most fiery one, the headline game of the day, or otherwise something risky/sensitive. Especially compared to Taylor, Makkelie, Orsato, and Marciniak. They are much much more exposed IMO.
Lets wait for his next appointments though

Disagree. Two British teams who are vastly opposite politically, first time they've ever played each other competitively (incredibly). Needs an experienced head.

Finally good news for Norwegian refereeing! Seems like Rossetti was very pleased with Eskĺs in his Europa League game the other week.
Svein Oddvar Moen was the last Norwegian to referee in the CL in February 2016, and now he is the fourth official.

And an important observer too
A Spanish refereeing team with their regular trip across the border to Portugal and Makkelie back in London.

Pleased to see Donatas Rumas in the group stages. He impressed very much in a lively match at Foila Esch in 2017, when still in Group 3 - the best at that level I had seen (in a limited field!) and much more to my liking than Nicola Dabanovic had been the night before at Dudelange.
We'll probably find in a couple of days that City fans disagree!

Do we think we will see Willie Collum in the CL Group stages ever again?

Why did Svein Oddvar Moen fall out of favour? I am sure he was often given big knockout champions league games.

Big Game for Mariani on only his second CL game.
Italian refereeeing has been in decline in terms of elite officials in recent years since Rizzoli et all departed the scene.
Im sure Rosetti is very keen to get four elite officials in the house as soon as possible.

I think it started to go downwards after the Iceland v Finland game in October 2016 when he only booked a Finnish player who grabbed his shirt and pulled him back. It was clearly a red card and he was taken off a European game later.
He never did a CL game again but he refereed some EL games the season after. He had a Conference League qualifier in July this year, his first European game for three years.

Theres been 3 matchdays and he had a game in week 2, Hes not the only elite ref without a game this week, he isnt gonna get appointments every single gameweek.

Thoughts on this?
Looks like a penalty to me. Only debate is if it actually hits his hand.
-
point taken hertsref123 Oliver has had 1 game in the 3 matchdays so far and Uefa are probably giving games to other upcoming refs to see how they do alongside the ones you expect to see at this level and yes Oliver isn't the only elite ref without a game count Brych into that

Glad he is getting a match in Matchweek 4, fully deserved and getting top matches as well.

Is it usual for a referee to be appointed to a Sunday league game and then a Tuesday CL game? It wouldn't happen for a club.
Oliver is due to referee Arsenal V Liverpool today I believe.

FIFA wont be happy. They have said referees should not be getting games every 3rd match day or less. Other Federations are complying with this but yet again the PL think theyre special and ignore it completely. He literally just falls outside the UEFA min 48hrs between games. Disgraceful by the PGMOL. They would have known about the CL game 10 days ago.
-
Have there been other instances of it happening? It's not something I really remember coming across before which is why it stood out to me. Is it possible the PSG appointment was a late change?

No it was known at least a week ago

Hopefully when Webb takes over, we stamp this nonsense out and start treating our officials better, and in line with what the rest of Europe are doing. Its not as if Oliver was the only ref who could do Arsenal V Liverpool. Hopefully he gets a rest next weekend.

Has it happened before in PL? I remember Lee Probert replacing Martin Atkinson on a Chelsea V Liverpool game around 10 years ago because Atkinson got a Tues CL appointment. I don't recall other instances of it happening but I might just not have noticed.

There were at least 2 cases in Spain where a referee had an EL appointment on 21:00 CET and a La Liga match on Saturday at 12:30 CET. 36 hours between the 2 matches.

Thank you UEFA for appointing Danny & István to games with a different kick off time. Makes my life easier!
I will also point out, as we have been discussing it, that both of them only had 1 VAR appointment each at the weekend following last week's midweek CL games & their forthcoming CL games this week. Their respective games were also ones with shorter travel distances. Well done to the FRF & KNVB for considering their referee's welfare. PGMOL take note.
-
As a matter of interest, who actually makes the Premier League appointments?
-
I think it is Jon Moss these days. Happy to be corrected though if I am wrong on that.

The idea of Mike Riley being the UEFA Referee Observer for Danny Makkelie has a vaguely ludicrous ring to it, akin to me being an Official Observer to the Judgements delivered by Lord Reed of Allermuir, the President of the Supreme Court.

Thanks. As discussed before, I'm not sure there's a complete consistency between FIFA and UEFA's appointments in this regard. I'd certainly be expecting a referee going to the World Cup to be having regular CL appointments in the group stage.
-
She is in charge of a WWC play off final tonight

A considerable number of VAR interventions last night if the BT highlights are anything to go by, and a number of overturned decisions including Makkelie at Athletico Madrid. I wonder what Mr Riley made of that one. Most interventions seemed justified although, once more, we had a 'Euro penalty award' for hands which was outrageous - ball hammered from no great distance towards the defender who was turning his back and had his hands by his side.

The one in Danny's game was a great intervention. No way he could have seen the attacker initiated the contact in real time, it was on his blindside. That was a perfect example of how VAR should work. One in István's game as well, he'd booked an attacked for a dive but after VAR intervention and an OFR he rescinded the yellow & gave the penalty.

Oh yes.
Im sooo glad that VAR Dennis Higler invited Danny Makkelie to re-view the incident. Just imagine, in case VAR supported the on-field decision, Im pretty sure there would be a step-on-achilles image on the front page of the Spanish newspapers. That would create some damage for Makkelie, who (I agree with bmb) in full speed couldnt assess this properly. Now, they punished the first and most severe foul. Expected decision. 1000% agree.
Imo a great advertisement for the existence of VAR (!) and great teamwork. UEFA should be happy.

Unexpected and big appointment for Sanchez Martinez. The Spanish is far from convincing and this match could be a hot one.
Not so big match for Makkelie. Taylor with Barcelona's last chance. Oliver and Turpin for Group B. Atletico does create some trouble to the committee.
Low kew match for Meier. This match should go to a 1st Group referee.
-
Another trip to London for Missy bmb then!
-
Thats a big fourth official appointment for Jones too.
Meier with an important observer, but as stated, a 1st group official would have been appropriate.
-
Great game for Taylor, especially as it's a must win game for Barcelona, and a pretty big game for Oliver too. Looking at the table in group D, although not as high profile as Taylor's game, that's still an important game for Makkelie.

Oliver in Belgium will be fine for him. Its not that big of a game at all.
Wondering how he will travel to Belgium. From experience of travelling to Bruges. It isnt well connected by plane. Nearest airport with flight to UK is Brussels. Thats an hour away. Long travel times for Oliver. Perhaps a private plane to a closer airport?
-
Oliver's been fine - quite a niggly game where it's difficult to shine, but can't thing of anything he got wrong. Two minor things - he did blow too early for a foul in the first half with a Bruges player through on goal, and a questionable lack of injury time in the second half (not that it mattered) despite a number of VAR checks. He was ably assisted by Kavanagh, who had a busy time of it at the start of the second half - with recommending a review for Michael for a penalty which ended up being awarded (Michael had his back turned when it happened), and then he spotted encroachment at the penalty leading to a retake. Good night all round for the English team.
Looking forward to seeing the other team in action shortly, in a game which now has little riding on it thanks to Inter's result.

Taylor was OK, a couple of missed decisions on corners, Beswick had a non-offside decision overturned, and Anthony had a penalty overturned. Not horrendous decisions originally, but correctly overturned. Adam Nunn made some excellent tight calls on offsides (or not offside in some cases).
Big controversy is at Tottenham, where there is a lot of debate over whether VAR should have ruled out Kane's goal. I'd need another look at it to decide but it looked very tight. Conte rightly sent off for his OTT reaction.

The penalty given by Oliver after OFR. The attacker appears to stand on the defender first. Apparently Oliver wasnt shown this.
If Kavanagh saw the stand and deemed it a foul then what happens does he call the OFR?
Surely its a red not yellow though for VC?

Very tight
He's offside. MM in it but a correct call. Impossible for Danny or Hessel to see in real time. Another masterclass from Danny and his team in my humble opinion. Jan made a couple of excellent calls in the first half as well. Disallowed goal for scoring with hand. Well done Danny & team. Observer will be very happy with that performance

Has Danny Makkelie got a new whistle style. He used to have his whistle on a landlord on his right hand. Now he holds it.

Yes he is experimenting with the finger thing - I don't know what it's called. First time was at the weekend domestically and then 2nd time today. I did moan at him about using the 1 handed advantage signal tonight as well!

It's a Molten Valkeen on a flip-grip! Very nice whistle to use, no doubt getting used to it before the world cup where they appear to be semi-standard issue.

Nice to whistle with but I think lanyard helps draw cards quicker.
Surely its not a must the World Cup. Both Taylor and a Oliver use lanyards. In fact most if not all English referees bar Mike Dean do

First time I have seen Jose Maria Sanchez Martinez referee a game tonight. He was excellent. Really calm and composed with good decisions throughout, just a few fouls here and there and one offside wrong.
He isnt like the other Spanish referees who whistle too many fouls like Dell Cerro

From an 'outsider' perspective, the whistle lanyard feels like a very English thing. Barely anyone in Aus uses a lanyard, and Jarred always looks somewhat out of place in the prem without one!
That said, maybe it's us who are the outsiders on that regard...
I've noticed Oliver carries a Fox40 classic and a Valkeen on his lanyard in some matches. I've found the Valkeen is generally easier to hear in the 'bigger' matches with jam-packed stadiums compared to the Fox40. That said, I personally find the Fox40 as having a greater whistle tone variation.

Didn't stop him being able to draw them pretty quickly! He's still old style with the cards together in a notepad, wonder when he will switch to the different cards in different pockets!

Forgot he did that. English style is right pocket for yellow. Some have it in the left pocket, Tierney I think. Only Attwell has it high. I prefer Turpin method. Yellow shirt left (where makkelie keeps his cards) and back pocket for red. Like Brych as well. That or the Kuipers and Taylor style of yellow in short right and red shirt left

Marciniak and Vincic with the most important matches here. Some lesser seen names elsewhere, including Stieler at Anfield. I did think Stieler was going to be the next top referee from Germany, but his star has somewhat waned in the last couple of years.

Taylor and Oliver on duty for the last rd of games for Wednesday lets hope more English involvement Thursday in the europa league/conference league
-
Games in Group G are dead rubbers completely
although I think this will be the first Azeri referee in the Champions League, which is an an achievement.
Massive games in Group D as all four teams can qualify.
Taylors game is important too for qualification, Olivers less so.

Is that the right way round in terms of Taylor's and Oliver's games or am I missing something? I thought Shakhtar or Leipzig can qualify in Oliver's game, whereas Benfica are through and Maccabi are eliminated in Taylor's. Out of interest, if Shakhtar beat Leipzig so they both finish on 9 points, what is the determining factor - goal difference overall, number of wins, results and goal difference in their 2 matches, or what?

Head to Head so Shakhtar will go through if they win.
Taylors game is important as Benefica can still win the group and Maccabi can still get Europa League

Correct, I think Oliver's match is far more significant than Taylor's
If two teams both finish level on points, the deciding factors are:
1) Points obtained in the two matches between them
2) Goal difference in the two matches between them
3) Goals scored in the two matches between them.
If that still doesn't split them, it goes to:
4) Goal Difference in all the group games
5) goals scored in all the group games
6) away goals scored in all the group games
7) number of wins in all the group games
8) number of away wins
9) lower disciplinary points
10) club coefficient :)

Thanks tef. And I now see the relevance of Taylor's game too.

I know I'm new to this forum but I have a question that some of you guys might be able to help me out with
I've been viewing RTR as a guest for around a year now and would see myself as being fairly up to date on refs and the laws of the game. However, I can't understand in the slightest why Ivan Kruzliak didn't give this as a pen after being sent for an OFR. The hands are in an unnatural position. I know he was just trying to protect the face but he shouldn't have his hands up there. Or am I just missing something?

Excellent performance from Marciniak last evening in the hot-house of Marseille. Let the game flow and played some excellent advantages. Ok, perhaps he was a tad lenient at times, but he never lost control and, in the intimidating atmosphere throughout, that was no bad thing. I particularly liked it when SM waved play on after Kane went down in the penalty area. It looked a stonewall penalty, but replays showed a foot on the ball and a clean last-gasp tackle. Even our Harry didn't moan at that one! A game of two halves and interesting how much work the AR on the far side had to do compared with his colleague on the near side. However, all decisions seemed correct. Good work, SM and team!

Under the LOTG, insofar as how I understand the handball law, it should 100% have been a penalty.
I also think though it's just about supportable for a non penalty - he didn't make himself bigger, he instinctively put his hands up to protect his face, which you can't really blame him for. Hands were above shoulder level but then so is his head. Now as to deliberate, you can argue either way - instinctive reaction to protect face = non deliberate but putting your hands up to protect your face = knowing the ball is going to hit there = deliberate.
It'll go down as an error, whether for him or the VAR or even both I don't know but I personally preferred the non pen call even though it was technically wrong.
PS Welcome Adam!

The VAR clearly tells Kruzliak that it was a penalty for deliberate handball, hence the ref being sent to the monitor, so there is only one person to blame here. I suspect Mr Kruzliak will be hearing further from UEFA on this one!

Whilst this might have been wrong in (today's) Law not to award a penalty, morally this was the correct outcome. Had the player not raised his hands to his face the ball would have hit him in the face, resulting in a head injury and an immediate stop in play followed by an uncontested drop-ball restart.
What actually happened was an attacking corner. Surely that is a better outcome for the attacking team?

Italians tend to be hawkish on matters relating to handball, and it is therefore noteworthy that Graziano Cesari, the ex-FIFA referee who comments on refereeing issues on the Italian Mediaset channels, came down in favour of not giving a penalty. Incidentally, because of the distance of the camera from the action the images on the television replays made it difficult to make out what exactly had happened. I hope the images on the VAR monitors were somewhat sharper.

Sorry jad but I can't agree with you on this one. The ball was struck from some distance away and the player could in my view have blocked the ball with his head or back or got under it and flipped it over the bar with his head. We see this all the time. Players at that level now block with their hands behind their backs not in front of their faces. I'm still with Adam on this one.

Cracking game for Englands number one referee
Didn't the #1 referee do the Club World Cup final yesterday?

Great appointment for Oliver and team.
It says all we need to know about VAR in the premier league though that he is assisted by a Polish VAR!
I wonder if theyll use Makkelie for the return leg depending on the status of the tie.
If not, Kovacs would be a popular choice!

I believe he's only had an italian team Twice since the Juve debacle (Atalanta and Lazio). He's generally had very few appointments involving them.

Given he refereed Lazio, and the last time I checked they were Italian, in November 2020 he clearly isn't "out of doing Italian teams".

Brilliant and deserved for Oliver but agree that is a risky 4thers appointment, I would have put Robert Jones, Darren England or Andy Madley on it

BMB Clearly happy with the real madrid-chelsea appointment ;), I'd argue the likes of Jones, Madley and England as 4th official, would be just as risky, as they have no experience of doing champions league middles either, although I believe Madley has had a few European appointments already?
I'm not convinced by Gil Manzano tbh, This is certainly a big test for him, interesting to see how it goes.
-
Great appointment for Istvan Kovacs, he seems to be very well thought of in uefa and rightly so on form.
Good appointment for Oliver too.
Interesting to see Letexier on the Chelsea game, and a spanish official on the man city game

Not the easiest games last night for Kovacs, both Milan and Napoli were not happy with some of his calls - it was very stop-start. In the end, nine yellow cards were issued. I think it will need a very strong and experienced official next week. Naples is a very difficult place to referee and Milan has now beaten Napoli twice in the last couple of weeks at the San Siro. Although Taylor refereed them in the last round it could be him (as I would have thought the other three games could not be refereed by him), Turpin (although he had Milan), Marciniak or Makkelie.

Tomorrow has Makeliie and Turpin written all over it. Danny has been protected this season in the World Cup and UCL so I'd say he'll get the final. I'd say Taylor will get the Semi with no English teams. If United don't get through, Oliver may get a UEL semi final.

Very surprised with this appointment thought it would go to Kovacs, he may get the return leg in Manchester to keep someone happy or either of the two milan games. Tho i guess uefa might appoint Orsato to the Real v City second leg
-
Kovacs is OUT after his showing in Milan. Orsato is most likely OUT since he had Real last round. That leaves Makkelie/Marciniak, Taylor plus one for the 3 remaining. Gil Mazano is a possibility for tomorrow, or next week. So is Zwayer. Final appts are possible for both. Vincic looks extremely unlikely after his last showing. Whoever out of Makkelie/Marciniak doesn't get a SF will get the final. However, for me, it gets more likely for Szymon by the day.
Funny how some things are so definitely known by everyone apart from the referees they are known about.

I'm pretty sure it will be yellow. Man city in blue, Real in their black kit. Courtois normally wears a blue top, but he cant wear that against City. His second choice is normally red, in the exact same shade as the red Macron refereeing kit.

Is this unprecedented to have the same ref for a semi and a final? Surprised to see Makkelie missing from the latter stages.
But what a last few months for Marciniak and thoroughly deserved too

Last one I can think of was clatts 2016, But that was in the collina era, under rosetti I think its unprecedented.

The old rules about not getting a Semi followed by the Final are out of the window. I wonder if Man City were consulted ? I think Makkelie can consider himself unfortunate but if your face doesn't fit then you won't get the top appointments. It was ever thus.

Congratulations to all the final officials.
I like it a lot that the performance principle prevailed. Having said that, meritocracy must always prevail, to prevent that certain referees are being unmotivated and don't believe in their fair chances. In the 2021/2022 season, Danny Makkelie was the best referee and we all know how the story ended.
There are some urgent choices to be made within the Dutch team:
- VAR: Should they keep backing Pol van Boekel? Of course, he is a bestie of Björn Kuipers, the committee member. However, they have to be neutral, make sensible choices and admit that it was for a big part on VAN BOEKELs poor performances that Makkelies team missed out on a final this year. And besides, Pol van Boekels name triggers already a lot of controversy before a kick-off. You can't say that about a Brisard or Kwiatkowski. When do they wake up in the Netherlands? This is TOP SPORT and sometimes hard choices have to be made.
- MOTIVATION; Is Makkelie unmotivated? And if so, what's the role of UEFA/Rosetti? Can they do something about this, motivate him and let him believe in a fair 2023/2024 chance? Otherwise they will lose a very reliable pair of hands for the hottest matches. Is Makkelie surrounded by coaches that make him perform better? Some important stuff to think about.
- Fitness; he has to be top fit again to make a good chance.
For next season there are just 3 "logical" candidates for the UCL final if an English team is in the final: Makkelie, Vincic and Kovacs. If Makkelie manages to find his 2020-2022 top form again, he should be the #1 candidate, head and shoulders above the rest. I just hope he will realise that, is resilient and still hungry to fight for it, after two dissapointing seasons and a bad treatment by UEFA. And maybe, UEFA has to keep him away from the most risky games, instead of sacrificing him.
