Problems at Millwall. Lee Swabey replaced Tony Harrington prior to KO, then himself went off injured and was replaced by senior assistant.

This from today's Sunday Times:
"Bolton manager Phil Parkinson could not believe his eyes as he watched the fourth official celebrating Millwall's late equaliser. Ref Lee Swabey - already a replacement for the unwell Tony Harrington - withdrew with an injury and was replaced by an assistant, Daniel Leach, with spectator Steve Perry doing 4th official duties at The Den"
I've not seen the highlights yet so cannot comment. Perhaps strange that Swabey didn't take over as 4O unless his injury was serious. Presumably Mr Perry was a Millwall fan (? and qualified ref?), but still a bit off if he did celebrate his team scoring a late and crucial equaliser. Mind you, I'll probably do the same at Selhurst Park if by any chance I'm needed as 4O in the Palace v Burnley game next Saturday ;D

What happened was around the 10th minute the 4O celebrated a double save from the Millwall goalkeeper, then once Swabey got injured he became 4O and the Millwall fan then became assistant referee and being at the game myself I can’t say that I noticed him celebrating the goal as he was assistant ref at that point. The match assessor was down in the tunnel area for much of the game obviously trying to sort it all out never seen anything like it before.

So who took over Daniel Leach's role as an Assistant ?

So this Steve Perry was 4O to start with after Tony Harrington was taken ill & Lee Swabey took over in the middle from kick-off & then took over as AR after Lee Swabey got injured? If it is true that he celebrated a double save and/or the goal then I'd think if he had any aspirations of rising up the referee ladder he has completely blown them!
I took over as assessor, as a favour, at an AFCB league game back in our L2 days at short notice as the designated assessor was unable to do the game & sat completely passive for the entire match! It wasn't easy & I just cheered every goal in my head, it's what you do! Absolutely froze as well, I'd always have an AFCB goalie top on under whatever I was wearing in winter as a base layer for added warmth & despite the fact it couldn't be seen I removed it anyway! After that game I started wearing a long sleeved ref shirt as my base layer just in case!

Steve was a level 4, but I think he is retired now. He's certainly a qualified referee though and with a lot of experience.

Slightly off topic, I am afraid but we were in London on Saturday evening and in the Virgin Trains lounge at Euston on our way home when in came the Bolton Wanderers team in smart track suits awaiting their train back to Manchester.
The lounge was quite full but they were quiet and extremely polite asking if the empty seats were free before sitting down. Mrs R is slightly incapacitated through arthritis but when our train was called and we got up to leave, those near us saw her difficulty and jumped up to move their chairs to make an easier way through for her. Not really the perception of modern footballers so Mrs R was very impressed and says she is now a Bolton fan. All I got was a "They were far more helpful than you!"
