Some very good appointments, some predictable, others slightly baffling
Great appointments for Rebecca Welch and Natalie Aspinall. Good to see other SG2 ARs in SG1 teams.
Not quite sure how in a round where all Prem sides come in that they couldnt find room for Michael Salusbury to ref at least one of them.
New white badge on show on Friday night. David Coote with a busy few days.
-
Nice opportunity to show off his new fifa badge on itv for Darren England. Also good to see Harrington and Salisbury given a go at being VAR in this round - also Natalie Aspinall as AVAR and then as assistant the following day at a PL stadium - promotion on the cards??
-
Some travelling expenses being totted up as well!
-
Thomas Bramall and Josh Smith with Prem teams - Charlton v Norwich could easily be a shock depending on who they put out
-
Good appointments for welch and aspinall, nice to them progress.
Not in favour in var at this stage, we should wait til qf or sf stage where all teams can then have equal opportunity.
-
Some good opportunities there at higher levels than the ones they usually work at. Bell and Barrott clearly fancied by the FA/PGMO and from what I’ve seen I can see why that would be. I haven’t seen Josh Smith yet but have heard positive notes. One for the future at the top or too soon to say?
I too agree that the Salisbury appointment is crazy. What a great chance to see more PL teams and one missed IMO.
Now, I am all for equality and seeing more female officials in the game has been a huge step forward in recent years. However. I have just looked and please correct me if I am wrong here, but Rebecca Welch has refereed 5 EFL league games to date and a small number of Pizza Trophy games. Only one of those games was in League One.
Would a male first year referee be entrusted with a Third Round game in the FA Cup involving a Championship team and a high flying League One team? I just simply cannot see the justification for this appointment at all. Feel free to shoot me down but it’s not only bizarre, but in my opinion it’s appears to be purely done for one reason which is totally wrong for all the other officials on the list. I feel an FA Cup game in this round is one that should be earned on merit and I simply don’t feel that five league games can possibly justify that appointment.
This is no fault of Rebecca’s of course and I do wish her well. However I am sure this left a salty taste for other referees on EFL when this came out today

It seems a bit surprising someone like Salsbury wasn't given one of those games.
I'm sure Coote will get a warm reception at Anfield..
Sometimes a referee in line for PL promotion, like Andy Madley a few years ago, gets a PL team in FA Cup but doesn't seem to have happened this year, not that I especially know who would be next in line? Don't seem to be any indications of a PL trial game coming up, which normally happens around Christmas.
Good that Harrington and Salsbury are getting VAR experience, and following on from other thread I believe Rob Jones' first VAR match of season too. One good thing about using VAR in FA Cup is it can give more experience to more officials. Personally I think it's right to use VAR in as many games as possible.
-
Pleased to see one of the 'big guns' (Anthony Taylor) in charge of Millwall v Palace. Despite neither side being particularly high profile in their divisions, this derby match needs a high profile ref in my view.
-
Quote: It seems a bit surprising someone like Salisbury wasn't given one of those games.
...particularly as there are no replays to fall back on

You made a great point and well constructed.
I view this subject from two opposing points so let me give you the other side. Equality and Equity are NOT equal. Yes, the two words are similar, but the difference between them is decisive.
While I understand your point that it will leave salty taste for other Male EFL Referees but let us think about it the other way. Should all EFL Referees be on equal playing field when it comes to being appointed on a prestigious match? That is a question of Equality. But should all EFL Referees (Female - Sole One on the EFL) get more exposure to ensure that "Female" Referees across the country view them as Role Model so they could take up whistle as well? That is a question of Equity.
One could argue that the playing field was sweep under Female's Referees decades/centuries ago hence only few months ago that it produced first FL Female Referee.
As I said, you made a very valid point but we all know that moving up the ladder does not automatically means you were better than ones that never get a looking.
-
I see nothing wrong with using profile as a guide to appointing providing, and it's a massive providing, the performances merit the appointment. Whether Ms Welch's performances do so, I and most of us on RTR are unqualified to comment accurately.
-
Not sure why we need Moss on our game at Bristol City…
That would have been a perfect game for an up and coming NL official to handle… even Bobby Madley would have been a perfectly good fit.
No surprise Oliver has the prime time Monday evening offerings…
-
I understand the point made on equality and equity and again it was a very well made one. However, Miss Welch has had a high profile since doing the trial match last season so is very much in the public recognition. The 3rd Round of the cup is too far in my opinion though given that she has only been entrusted with 5 league games since August, only one of which was in League One. I sincerely hope not but this kind of appointment could well set a referee of little experience at this level up for a huge fall.
Barrott’s appointment to referee at Stoke for example seems to me a much more sensible one. Having watched him on the Stockport game in the last round I think this appointment is earned and fully justified. This is now I think his second season as an EFL referee so this feels about right.
-
I think the fact she’s only refereed 5 league games is a bit of an unfair point - she has been involved in WSL matches at weekends, but also Women’s Champions League and International qualifiers have fallen at times which would effectively rule her out of some EFL match weeks.

By Oliver’s game I presume you mean the clash between a mid table Midlands team and Manchester’s 3rd rate team? 🤪
-
My take on Rebecca Welch's appointment is that, so far as appointments are concerned, Gender should be irrelevant and to bring it up, no matter how well intentioned, just reinforces the possibility that an official's gender becomes more of a talking point than the fixture to which they are appointed.
Rebecca, like many others is a National List Official and viewed, rightly or otherwise as capable of handling the match.
-
Male or female my point stands. Had this have been a first year male referee having done 5 EFL games and a handful on WSL I think there would be much more said. As I stated this is nothing against the referee, I truly hope she has a great game, but these appointments must be earned on merit whether you are male or female. The FA Cup 3rd Round should not be used as an FA advertising campaign for referees.
If this referee continues to officiate the games in WSL and internationals as stated previously then she could be looking at 10-12 EFL games all season compared to probably 35+ from many others. Are we saying that would be enough games to justify a promotion to SG2 as well?
-
welch and Aspinall for promotion to prem?

They'd have to be promoted to SG2 first.

Natalie Aspinall already is SG2.

Ah didn't realize, thanks for correcting me.

I could be totally wrong here, but isn’t Harrington from Newcastle? Just always had it in my head that he was? He’s been given the Newcastle game which peaked my curiosity

He is from Hartlepool.

Michael Salisbury has now replaced Tony Harrington at Newcastle.
-
Noe the Spurs match has had changes to its officials confirmed, fingers crossed John Brooks stays fit and healthy for the next 4 days :D

Why have Madley and Friend been swapped?
-
Why have Madley and Friend been swapped?
Presumably because Madley has been off for the last couple of weeks so they didn’t want to expose him to a TV game?

An evening in front of the TV for me this evening watching Swindon v Man City and Darren England. My word, someone is pushing England's career very hard at present. He is a Yorkshire referee isn't he so I wonder who on earth that might be ?
From the little I have seen of England, nothing live only on TV, I rather like his style and whilst on occasions he has displayed some naivety, particularly on positioning ( which perhaps is only to be expected when beginning at a new more senior level ) I have little doubt he will be ranking among the "big hitters" before too many more seasons on a career trajectory something akin to Paul Tierney's perhaps. A Match Observer and former FL referee, whom I know and whose opinion I greatly respect, rates England highly.
-
Why is England wearing the FA badge?
Surely the same thing hasn’t happened like last year and the FIFA badges for 2022 aren’t ready! 🙄
-
A laid back, undemonstrative performance from England who seemed to get most things right and most commendably is not a referee who seeks to make himself the centre of attention. This wasn't a particularly testing match but he refereed what was in front of him competently and well.
-

It appears so, none of the 2022 FIFA referees in my native Australia have received their new badges as of yet
-
On MOAS if you accept a game on the Sunday (In Welch's case WSL games) you cannot be appointed one on the Saturday because it's classed as a rest day, and she is a FIFA Official after all

I agree with you Whistleblower, but deplore Darren's failure to caution a Man City player in the 1st half for simulating spectacles at Darren after he had been pulled up for a foul. In my view, suggesting that a referee's eyesight is in question should result in a mandatory caution.

100% agree. It is another example of a top level referee "managing the game" to the detriment of their colleagues on the parks who will now have to take that very clear act of dissent on the chin or be accused (by the dissenting player) of being too sensitive "unlike that bloke on the telly".

I absolutely agree; it wasn't England's finest moment in the match. It should certainly have been a caution ( the commentators said the player was very fortunate to avoid one ).

I think bmb needs to have a chat with Mr Nunn and tell him to straighten his FIFA badge lol. Dear oh dear!!
It clearly doesn’t like the lilac outfit!
-
I cannot understand how that 'tackle' in minute 45 is not a penalty? The Millwall player comes straight through the back of the Palace attacker as he is about to shoot. A lot of off the ball stuff as well. Not a great half so far for Mr Taylor, and Vieira isnt happy either

I missed my Nunny in purple 😭

Mike Dean has a rare problem at Leicester. The floodlights have failed and the stadium’s only light is from fans’ mobile phones.

Senior moment, came out in blue so will try again! A young sub came on for Swindon late in the game by the name of 'East'. Is he related to ex-PL ref Roger East, from that neck of the woods, by any chance?
-
Gillett wearing the Liverpool FA badge at Chelsea.
Does he not qualify for the three lions FA badge as he’s obviously from Oz?
My knowledge of how that system works is lacking I’m afraid.
-
FA badge awarded for refereeing certain FA finals and/or participation in recognised international fixtures I believe.

I thought he got the ball first and that Schlupp was very fortunate to escape a second yellow card for a foul that would 100% have earned a first yellow card. But (and it is a big but) I was watching the game through Millwall tinted spectacles!

I think that the Schlupp foul was borderline yellow and, as a Palace fan, was quite glad that AT did not reach for his pocket. Sensible in my view, but as you say, a yellow if it had been a first offence.
Palace 1st goal was offside in the build up, but of course no VAR.

Looks like the 2022 badges are on display in the AFCON tournament.
