Title: IPL Eliminator - Royal Challengers Bangalore v Kolkata Knight Riders
Post by: UmpireIan49 on Mon 11 Oct 2021 19:36
An exciting IPL match sullied by poor umpiring and some very petulant behaviour by RCB captain Virat Kohli, who sadly has plenty of history in arguing with officialdom.

The umpire in question was Virender Sharma, who gave three incorrect lbw decisions, all overturned on review. The third of the three decisions, was a not out decision that to the naked eye, looked very out. Reviewed and the third umpire correctly overturned the decision.

We were then treated to the petulant histrionics of Kohli, arguing with Mr. Sharma and this led to the other umpire, the more experienced Chris Gaffaney, to intervene. Kohli wasn’t to be placated until Mr. Sharma gave him a rebuke, and quite rightly. What would have happened if there was no DRS, I shudder to think. Saying all of that, an umpire standing in that class of cricket getting three decisions overturned does leave some questions to be answered.

I can think of a few of my fellow umpiring colleagues who also wouldn’t have taken too kindly to Kohli’s misbehaviour. One day, Kohli will encounter someone a lot more rougher and tougher , be it an umpire or opposition player, and hopefully he may think twice before he argues like a petulant footballer we see all too often in top flight football in the UK.

In the end, RCB lost, so maybe some poetic justice was served.

I would imagine the final would be umpired by any of the following four officials - Richard Illingworth, Chris Gaffaney, Michael Gough and Nitin Menon.
