I assumed this was Harry Dempsey, briefly a Scottish League referee, who came from Bishopbriggs, a stop or two along from Croy.

A.McKenzie suggests the FIFA referee Alistair, who started in Coatbridge, subsequently moving to Larbert.

Ronnie Gordon also made the referees' list, as did Tom Kellock, by then of East Kilbride.

If memory serves me right, the John Gordon affair came to light when linesman Rollo Kyle's dad, who I think was said to have been a referee himself, happened to mention to a footballing acquaintance how generous the gifts had been. Rollo Kyle (first name Thomas) was born in 1940. In 1937, one Donald McPhail Kyle married a Catherine C M Rollo, both events being in Glasgow, though in different registration districts. Could this be the D Kyle that appears several times?

JR Grant was presumably the SFL referee,(whom I once saw at Forfar) whose demotion led to threats of strike action by referees in the 70s.If I remember aright, he had a stay of execution, but did not last long thereafter. He was by then based in Larbert. Records show a John Rennie Grant died in Larbert aged 75 in 2010 - and his birth was in Kelvingrove, Glasgow. This may be a coincidence, of course, as the combination of forenames John R and surname Grant is not that uncommon, but it would appear to be a very possible match.

Is that the same Harry Dempsey who subsequently relocated to the Manchester area, maybe Stockport, and became a FL linesman ? If so, he was later than that. I encountered him after his relocation but whilst he was still an active official, and that was in 1984.

Harry Dempsey was a tax inspector in Glasgow whose last match in Scotland was to referee Motherwell v Falkirk on 28th October 1972

His job took him to Chelmsford where he was listed as an F.L. linesman in 1973-74

He moved again, to Nottingham, where he is listed for 1980-81 & 1981-82

Possibly he then moved to Stockport and came off the F.L. list as he not named in 1983-84

I did not know about the Manchester area, associating him with Nottinghamshire and, if he was the linesman in the 1979 Cup Final, Chelmsford. Henry Dempsey was born in Cumbernauld (close to Croy) in 1941, so the line appointment in 1966 would not have been impossible for a young official considered promising at that time.
I believe he died in 1999 in Nottingham.

Henry "Harry" Dempsey, who died in Nottingham in Q1 1999, was born 26th May 1941 and was therefore only 57

He was on the line for the 1979 F.A. Cup Final two weeks before his 38th birthday

Presumably Mr R.G. 'Bert' Benzie was Robert: Roberts often get called Bert in Scotland.

This is all a very long time ago. However, I have a vague recollection of Harry Dempsey moving to Stockport to work for a firm of accountants that was run by a FL referee :-

Or maybe he worked for that firm but remained resident in Nottingham ?

With regards to D Kyle. I think this is Donald Kyle who I believe was a Grade 1 official and was on the line for the 1960 European Cup Final at Hampden when Jack Mowat was the referee.

Donald Kyle also became a Referee Supervisor (Mowat was the Chief Supervisor) and was a close friend of Jack Mowat. Rollo was, indeed, his son. What is supposed to have happened is that Kyle Snr mentioned, in passing, to Mowat about the gifts (suits, I think) that Gordon, Kyle and David Mc Cartney (the 2nd linesman) received from AC Milan. Mowat passed this onto either/both UEFA and the SFA who investigated.

Clive Thomas is quite disparaging about Mowat in his book and seems to suggest Mowat received 'gifts' as a referee observer for FIFA in a WC tie in either Iran or Saudi Arabia
