18. Upton gives three called Rogers within this period. I have no idea which, if any, of them was ginger.
-
18 & 44 correct, it was William that was nicknamed Ginger because of Astaire's partner, not because of his hair colour

I liked your find for 37 too but Swain was the one I had gone with
-
I was rather pleased at finding Mr Suter for 37. JS or S Swain might be similar.

-

20 G F J Sawyer?
38. K J Underwood?

4 & 26 (not 20) correct but not 38 although I can see the cogs working
-
Which leaves
01 Sounds like a very aggressive act was declared by Welsh actor Richard
19 Freelance journalist who might repair rackets too
35 Reverse this Worksop mans to get a Scouse 'keeper of the 60s
38 Severe pruner might threaten this symbol of love by overdoing the dead heading
-
19. I had never heard of a stringer as a journalist, but F V Stringer must be the man.
38. I R Rosekilly.
01. CH or JA Warburton.
-
1, 19 & 38 correct
In journalism, a stringer is a freelance journalist, photographer, or videographer who contributes reports, photos, or videos to a news organisation on an ongoing basis but is paid individually for each piece of published or broadcast work.
Leaving 35 where you perhaps don't know the first name of the Worksop ref which is helpful for solving it
-
I found long ago that Upton only mentions one referee from Worksop. Reversing Thompson gave me Nospmoht, which seemed an unlikely name for a keeper. I tried reversing the only Worksop man I could think of, turning (Lee) Westwood into Eastwood, but that got me nowhere.
Mr Thompson was L D, so if the L stood for Lawrence, that might take us to Liverpool keeper Tommy Lawrence.

Yay!
