Well I'm surprised but pleasantly pleased with the appointments:
It shows that WR still have faith in Gauzere.
With Brousset in now as number 4 in France - Ruiz must have taken the defence job.
WR are not afraid to make some big calls picking Raynal who many would have said before was France's number 3 right to the top of the pecking order internationally!
And Berry who must be now Australia's number 1 in their eyes.
Feel for Williams & Gardner, they will get decent Summer appointments to make up for it.
Also interesting they have gone with Pickerill as TMO over Newman who specialises as TMO.
I guess the call in NZ had cost Poite his place this time round (even though it was Garces who initially spoke with Poite about the scrum). However, Poite should carry the can as his was with the whistle.
Great to see Barnes & Peyper out there officiating too - for me as they are not involved elsewhere at the moment suggests they are certs for the next RWC in France (bar any major issues).
Can't wait!!

No middle for Poite - interesting...

Interesting as I too thought Williams and Gardner had both performed well, although not disappointed in Berry, O'Keefe or Raynal.
Good experience for AJ Jacobs. Barnes inclusion as much to do with SA lacking strength in depth as anything else (plus who needs to see him ref Ire v Jap or Wal v Arg)

It was also going to be a tight call between the 4 in contention. Maybe as Gardner did the previous Lions tour, it was Berry's time. Or WR just didn't like the officiating at all in NZ which ruled them out. O Keefe has been around a bit longer, so WR probably rewards him with the tour.
The biggest surprise was Raynal's appointment - and a good one IMHO.
Still, all 3 are debutants and are WR's top officials for the future!
You are right with Barnes (nice few weeks away) - Absolutely agree with you in regards to depth in the SA ranks (a bit like the Australians a few years back), now it seems it's their time to struggle. WR obviously weren't fans of van der Westhuizen (who I actually rated) or Berry and Rastavenge it seems isn't really on the 15's radar for some reasons. Beyond AJ Jacobs, not a lot happening.

Just seen on Twitter that Pascal Gazre is stepping down as a match official after Saturdays game between the Lions and Japan.

So France have lost Ruiz and Gauzere in the space of a month. With Poite surely not far off retirement, maybe French refereeing isn't quite in the great shape it seemed?

Never felt comfortable with Gauzere in charge. Wish him well though in his intended career outside rugby.
See too on the World  site that Gardner and Poite - both of whom I expected to be on the Lions v South Africa Tests - have stood down from upcoming appointments due to injury. Maybe a good job neither were chosen in retrospect!

No wonder Raynal was the chosen Frenchman for Lioms, a good referee but almost last man standing.
