Not sure who was refereeing France v Wales but the early red card for Williams of Wales for handball, apparently following a VAR check, seemed extremely harsh. Handball? Possibly, but only possibly, according to current interpretation. Goal bound? No. And that in a friendly match.

Having seen the incident I can confirm that there very definitely was VAR in this friendly!

In terms of the decision, I think it’s a handball that uefa would expect to be given (not that I personally agree it should be a handball). Don’t think the ball was heading in so red card harsh.

Thanks.  They're a pretty reliable site. That won't go down well with the home crowd, he did not impress on a previous Hungarian outing or 2! Internationally I think it was v Wales at the Groupama. We won but he was not on form shall we say!  MOL Fehérvár game rings a bell as also being somewhat erratic! Vidi won on pens from memory. Pretty sure he also had a bad night at the office in a Fradi game as well, that was a draw away somewhere.  He's not Karasev level disliked but he's not one who will be welcomed!

Sorry to say, but before the Euros there are in some matches.

Poland - Russia, France - Wales and Netherlands - Georgia are the games to be set up with VAR.

Here is a link which shows the whole incident.

I might be in the minority here but fir me that decision is fine.

The arms (both) are outstretched away from his body, thus making himself bigger.
The arms are still moving when they block what for me looks a goal bound shot (instep of forward at an inwards angle towards goal, keeper on floor).
I think it is a DOGSO and correct in law.

I'm OK with your view RefObserver, but this was an 'international friendly' and I would ask the question, what the so-and-so was VAR being used in this and a few other 'friendlies'? From what I saw of the incident, this was one which the ref would not have given had VAR not checked it out. As it is, a Welsh player has to sit out a game in the build-up to the Euros, and if VAR is used in the remaining friendlies to come, then a player could be sitting out the first of the Euro group games, which seems patently unfair. All or nothing in my view!
Title: Re: international friendlies?

VAR training/match experience for match officials where it's not used domestically perhaps?  There's a few refs at the Euro's whose domestic leagues aren't yet blighted ahem don't have VAR so their opportunities for match experience are limited. Saudi Arabia have always been very accommodating in allowing Federations to send people there for VAR experience as are Greece but, as there is this whole global pandemic still sticking around, there have been issues with not being allowed to travel.
Title: Re: international friendlies?
Post by: Acme Thunderer on Fri 04 Jun 2021 13:50
I certainly don't have an issue with VAR being used in friendly internationals 'for training purposes'. However it should not be used in these instances to get players red carded. Instead incidents such as that in the France v Wales match should be noted as a potential red card offence missed by the referee and no further action should be taken. I note that the Wales authority are looking to appeal the red card and I hope they succeed.
Title: Re: international friendlies?
Post by: rustyref on Fri 04 Jun 2021 17:08
Agree, his arms just shouldn't be up there.  I don't think he has intentionally handled it, but under the current laws that is handball, and once it is given a red card is inevitable.

That said, I really don't think VAR should be being used in friendlies.

I assume Tiago Martins did not have the benefit of VAR at the Riverside this evening. England's 1st penalty, from which they scored to win the match, was very soft, even I suggest lamentably soft, Grealish falling over at the slightest touch. The second penalty was more clear cut, but memo to Southgate, do not let Jordan Henderson anywhere near the line up to take penalties during the Euros. Played 59, goals 0, and that was never likely to alter, even with a goalie who kept his hands behind his back until the kick was taken. Southgate was apparently not amused.

Wow -- Grealish falling over at the slightest touch --that must have been a real shock, surely he doesn't usually do this, it certainly must have been a foul because he has had plenty this season for exactly the same thing.
A very good player who does everything in his power to draw fouls and manages to get them, however, some defender will mark his card and will ensure that he isn't just playing at it.

I had thought I didn't know this ref but recognised him when I saw him.  Very in the background, chilled out performance from him. Did what he had to, when he had to, which was not very often! Players liked and respected him and lots of big smiles and handshakes post match.  He was on a winner pre match as soon as Missy bmb saw the red shirt!! Red shirted refs in my home stadium is always going to earn mega bmb brownie points!!

Anyone want to tell me who the 4th official was though? He's heading right into my totty list (despite the fact he looked about 18...)!!

Krzysztof Jakubik is 37/38. He is an UEFA 2nd Group referee promoted on December 2019. Not many matches on his palmares and mostly EL qualifiers.

I love Norbert! He's one of my favourites!  There again after a season long working a lot with the lovely Mr Solymosi he is now bald - I'm pretty sure those 2 things are connected somewhere! Are there any highlights TTFL? I didn't watch! The ground it was played at is very close to the Hungarian branch of bmb towers. Had we been in residence there currently we would have gone to the game. Gergő is our future elite referee.

Of our two up and coming FIFA referees I would rank him second behind Rob Hennessey (who also has a very good game in SCO-POL). Nonetheless I hope he has a great game and look forward very much to your thoughts bmb.

Great to see three Irish officials out refereeing decent games even if friendlies.

Coote's first full international?

He did Armenia v Estonia in the Nations League group stages in Sept 2020, but that’s his only other full international.

Anytime anyone joined him in the centre circle that he barely left he booked them...

29 March 2022

NORTHERN IRELAND - HUNGARY
Referee: Robert Harvey (IRL)
Assistant Referee 1: Dermot Broughton (IRL)
Assistant Referee 2: Darragh Keegan (IRL)
Fourth Official: Neil Doyle (IRL)

Looking forward to this one!

Thanks TTFL as always, for the green highlight, I think it looks quite well!

You might not like what I have to say...

Decision making was reasonable considering his shocking positioning and serious lack of fitness.  Barely moved more than 10 yards outside of the centre circle at any given time.  I'm not one for body shaming because I think it is cruel however he is no shape physically to be a top flight referee.  There are some big people who are still fit - he is not one of them! He needs to see a nutritionist urgently and start attending a gym to get himself in shape. His shirt was so tight over the bulge above his waistline it looked ready to tear apart and his shorts rode up on the inside of his legs the way they do on overweight people with chubby thighs - I say this from the 1st hand experience of being overweight and having chubby thighs myself...  I'd estimate he covered no more than 2km across the whole game, most refs cover between 10 & 14. He didn't run/sprint at any point, when he did move it was a slow painful jog. When Hungary scored our goal, he was only just leaving the centre circle! He was so far behind play the players were in a different time zone to him.  Zero rapport with players and his man management was appalling! There was something about the way he spoke with players, of both teams, that just wasn't right. I can't quite describe it but it was clear the players had no respect for him and openly didn't like him at all.  The plus point was that he was equally as poor for both teams.  Luckily for him neither team played that well and were not bothered about the game so behaved themselves. Not sure he would have been capable of dealing with any serious flash points - he'd never had made it over to them if they were more than 10 feet from the centre circle for starters!! It's credit to 22 players on the pitch behaving that there were no issues. No big calls to make thankfully, he was so far behind he needed binoculars!

That is as nice as I can be!

Sorry.

Looking back over the years it has been a gradual thing, although the period around lockdown has not been favourable.

Much akin to how Phil Dowd went before the sports scientists got hold of him.

Slightly off topic but as an encouragement FL ref David Rock has certainly shifted the pounds since he reached the list.

I’m surprised Hackett survived when he was in the PL with his tumultuous bulk.

One of our players Ádám Martin is a chunk and a half. He looks like a lad who loves a few pints and a kebab on a nightly basis let alone on a Friday night! First time anyone sees him they will laugh at the thought of him being a professional footballer, he's the stereotypical one that on appearance alone is last to be picked every time in PE. Then he comes on and your jaw drops as he covers every single blade of grass! He's currently top scorer in the NBI and despite his bulk, which clearly isn't muscle, he's as fit as, if not fitter, than most of his more slender, fitter looking peers.

bmb without having seen the game there is nothing in your report that sounds too far off the mark in terms of what I have generally seen from this referee. In my previous post I said he was one of our two up and coming FIFA referees - I say that as we only have two up and coming referees and as I said them I rate him as second of the two.

I haven't seen him recently but looking at more recent photos I can see what you mean by your description. I certainly concur with your comments on how he manages players, everyone can't be the players best friends, indeed they shouldn't be however they do need to build some kind of rapport and demonstrate a level of empathy - as well as being able to tell them to shut up and f*** off - when needed! From what I have seen of Harvey like you say he totally lacks any ability to connect with players and displays no significant natural authority.

Regardless - I do hope Harvey improves and I wish him all the best in improving his performances, it is very cut throat at UEFA level for referees from smaller football nations.

Harvey and Hennessy our two younger FIFA referees did friendlies during the last week or so. Hennessey made a crucial match changing error in his game but from what I have seen he put in significant effort into his positioning, displayed enthusiastic body language and gave a determined performance. Harvey may not have made a key error but I know which referee I would prefer to see on my teams next game.

He reminds me a bit of József Erdős a few years ago. Similar shape and level of fitness who managed to maintain reasonable decision making overall in easy games. József spent 1 summer really working hard on his weight and fitness and quickly went from a referee everyone dreaded seeing to being one of the most reliable safe pair of hands in the league. He continues to work hard on both, he's not naturally fit or healthy and probably has to work harder than a lot of his peers to stay in shape. Harvey has time on his side to do the same.  Someone needs to be honest with him though & he needs to be honest with himself and realise his weight and lack of fitness are holding him back. If he wants to reach the top then he needs to work hard & improve & I hope he has it in him to do it. I don't like making a report on a ref like the one I did, I always try and look for positives but there were none!

Balázs Berke in the last domestic round - player taken out right by the tech area, he immediately blows the whistle, gives the foul & a yellow card. Coach starts jumping up and down on the touchline screaming. Berke looked at him, said I've given the foul & a YC, WTF else do you want me to do, sit down & shut up. Coach burst out laughing, gave him a hug and went and sat down quietly! Can you imagine that in the PL - the media would have had kittens!

Sorry bmb, but surely there are basic but stringent fitness levels which all international refs have to meet, are there not? Even for 'friendlies', we can't have 'centre-circle park-refs' in charge, can we?!

Never mind, bmb. Adam will be able to enlighten us all come Thursday.

The dreadful errors from both teams made the others look good when in reality AFCB on a bad day would whoop both sides 9-0!

Ref was OK. Friendly leniency factored in, but I've heard that there should've been a pen for ROI for handball, while the ball was apparently out for our 2nd goal. However from what I saw he was fine, but of course its a friendly.

Hopefully someone nice for us on Monday. I dare to dream, but based off of what I saw tonight it won't need the most skillful Ref!

Hungary v Czech Republic

Ref Igor Pajac (Croatia)
AR: Ivan Mihalj; Kristijan Novosel
4O: ?
VAR: Ante Culjak
AVAR: Bojan Zobrenica

Being kind - weak and inconsistent. First half was ok but 2nd half not so... Lots of learning points with the biggest one being that if it is a foul by one team then it is also a foul by the other team. Have no problem with any of the YC given Hungary's way however I do have a problem with similar and worse fouls not being given, let alone being correctly sanctioned, when committed by Czech Republic. Very noticeable lack of consistency.

Individual incidents:

58: Foul on Sallai - not given but did eventually stop play for the physio to come on. Treatment went on for over 1 minute.
76: Nasty foul on Kerkez & it all kicked off. He stood looking confused and was completely ineffective in relation to the follow up handbags.  Did finally book the Czech player after it calmed down but very weak handling of it. Completely lacked authority.
79: Completely conned by Szoboslai (AFCB v Liverpool vibes). Free kick on the edge of the box that thankfully for him ended in row Z. Stopped it being a game changing key match error. Missed yellow for Szobo for exaggerating his fall, shall we say.
82: Gave a foul against Nego which was incorrect, perfect timing played the ball and at no point played the man - the man however did a Szobo and went down like a sack of spuds. Nego refused to give the ball back and was shouting at the referee and whilst I have sympathy for him, as it was a wrong call, you cannot do that and he should have been booked for delaying the restart or dissent. He could quite easily have been given 2 yellows one straight after the other such was his poor behaviour. Good call by Marco Rossi to sub him off instantly.
86: Provod booked for holding. That part was ok but it started by the penalty box and he was literally dragging the Hungary player around, pulling him back, pulling him sideways - our player tried to be honest and stay on his feet but the holding and dragging continued as far as the half way line before the ref finally decided to penalise it.
87: 2 Czech players literally screaming in the face of AR1 over the award of a thrown in. I'm talking neck veins bulging level of screaming - only 1 of the 2 was booked. They both should have been.

Can't remember what time but Dibz completely took out Kerkez, punched him in the face instead of the ball. Kerkez head flew back & he hit the deck not moving - ref played on! Head injury, player not moving and he played on!! Dreadful. There was also a Czech player down but not sure what happened with him. Was 30+ seconds before he stopped play and finally went and dealt with it. That is one he definitely needs to learn from - stop immediately for a head injury and even quicker when the player is prone and not moving.

So my first impressions are not very good. He looked quite young and there was one shot of him gazing, mouth open around the stadium which was packed to the rafters and as usual very loud and noisy. Similar look from him at half time as he went in. Perhaps he found it too intimidating. I'm not going to write him off after a singular viewing because that is not fair. Today he needs to accept his performance was below standard and work hard to improve on it. His fitness and positioning were very good.

Well I know he’s on the pitch because I watched him lead the teams out. Barely seen him since. On the very rare times he’s had to make a decision he has done so calmly and competently. Played one superb advantage for Turkey around 24. Very anonymous in the background in every way good in referee terms. He can be very happy with his 1st half performance. Same again 2nd half please. To answer the burning question - he’s in blue!

To answer the burning question - he’s in blue!

Decent 2nd half as well. Penalty to Hungary I felt was a bit harsh. Handball, came off his head and rolled down his arm, which was outstretched in front of him. Certainly handball within the current LOTG but one as a fan you would never want to see given against you. No problem with the referee giving it - it led to the only goal of the game and a Hungary win as well as being correct in Law! Schäfer András had a goal disallowed - correct call. Was his first game back after 13 months out injured and would have made it just perfect. One incident of note, Turkey player caught Kleinheisler László in the face. I'd say deliberate by the way he raked his nails down his face, causing scratch marks to be left... Right in front of AR2 but on his blindside, ref didn't see it. Final whistle was not long after and there was a bit of handbags between the 2 players, Kleiny was not happy and made his feelings known shall we say! Ref literally dragged them apart before being helped out by various players pulling them both away.  very random lineup by team ref after the final whistle, instead of standing next to each other they stood about 15/20 feet apart. Lots of smiles between them & the players from both teams, especially AR2 who even got a couple of hugs. Typical friendly match, pretty but not much substance to it. Enjoyable though. Team ref can be happy with their contribution and go home heads held high.
