I think you have to look more at Bankes, how he thinks the original decision should be overturned is beyond me. At least in my opinion Coote made the correct first decision, I think any confidence he may have had has been shot to pieces. Probably a good job there are no crowds.

Have to agree even as a United fan. I was also rather surprised earlier when Chris Kavanagh had Michael Oliver look at the monitor who then retracted his penalty to Villa in added time.
Two incidents where I'm not sure the criteria of "clear and obvious" was met.

Mr oliver also gave a pen in injury time villa v brighton today and mr kavanagh asked him to look and oliver changed his decision In similar circumstances.
Maybe we have missed a rule change during intl break perhaps now var can now re referee the games rather than ask referees to overturn obvious errors says he tongue in cheek.
I am with grandad walton on both the above occasions, the penalties should have been given and not reviewed
As there were no obvious errors to correct. Also the on field referee should be braver and stand his ground and

Also it appears from tv footage the onfield ref only gets one angle to judge on and in slow motion or stills,
The game isnt played in slow motion. If slow motion replays are needed how can it be an obvious error ?

Again VAR has f***ed up what was a decent refereeing performance. Personally I don’t think there was enough contact for it to be a penalty (and he played the ball first in any case) but that is not clear and obvious!!
But then Coote must take some of the blame for overturning his decision. He comes across to look at the monitor and a good referee will stick with their decision!
Not a penalty at the other end either but we all know about the handball rule. Coote’s confidence must now be shot and he will probably end up with a couple of weeks lifting up the boards!

I am shocked with all the dissension about VAR ---it is not necessary. VAR is always correct, tha is why it was introduced.We need to have everything 100% correct in the game and we do not need onfield officials to ensure that this is the case --dispense with them and leave it ALL to VAR ---perfect!

I thought David Coote was fine with the exception of the incidents described above , he is quick and decisive and has good fitness
Yet again another below par Utd performance and we can consider ourselves very fortunate

Watching BT post-match, it looked like West Brom should have had a free-kick in the build-up to the Man Utd penalty.

As others have said, I though David Coote had a good game. Perhaps not the most challenging, but he did everything correctly.
He doesnt appear to be the most confident, and I just think he had the confidence to give the penalty on a close call, but as soon as the VAR told him to check the decision, I think he probably knew before he for there he was going to overturn it.
After that he lost total confidence for the next 5-10 mins (which included utd correct pen - though not sure he had the view to give it, but could have been pulled back for a foul)

Dermot on Sky Sports this morning has confused everyone by giving different justifications for the same question over the West Brom and Aston Villa 'penalties'. He hasn't helped the grassroots officials at all there...

Why is there no discussion on why he didn't give a penalty for the clear shirt pull on Martial? How do we know from his angle that he even saw the shirt pull and if not then surely it is not correct to say it is not a clear and obvious error and it should warrant a pitch side review?
