Title: April Fool's Day
Post by: mutn3 on Fri 03 Apr 2020 16:42
Though there's not much to laugh about at the moment, I'm sure most of you remember when the Football League had a sense of humour, appointing Referees and Assistants to matches with a common theme around April 1st.

From my neck of the woods, Martin Mountain and Brian Hill ( or a Mr Hill if they don't overlap) assisted Denis Hedges.

So, Upton's at the ready, do your best!

Hi  There was time in the 1980 when Jim Ashworth ( who was the appointments officer for the Football League DID appoint on April Fools Day using the names that linked together. Ity created much interest and was very interesting at the time. I just cannot remember what year that was Does anybody know?

Thanks Gelstay and welcome to the site. If it was Jim Ashworth who did the appointing, I think it must have been after the end of the 1990/91 season when he retired from the referees list. That being the case, we seem to be limited to 1995 and 2000 when 1st April fell on a Saturday, and certainly those years were the only ones between 1991 and 2000 when Crystal Palace played on 1st April (but accepting that fixtures involving other clubs may well have been played midweek in other years). Sorry, I cannot recall this interesting situation and cannot help further.
