Kumar Dharmasena really. He is the most over rated umpire. Surely there was another option. And probably the most used I would think. His name seems to crop up in almost every series.

Any news on South Africa v England?

Illingworth and Kettleborough not doing the calls for permanent non-neutral umpires any favors today, with 4 decisions being overturned. 3 for Kettleborough and 1 for Illingworth.
Incidentally all 4 decisions originally went against the West Indies.

I thought it was two each as Illingworth certainly had two overturned. An umpire's call went in the favour of England as well yesterday.
Alex Wharf made his ODI umpiring debut at Cardiff, England v Australia, in June 2018
he has umpired 3 x ODIs & 10 T20Is
Made his ODI debut for England in 2004 v India taking the wickets of Ganguly, Laxman and Dravid to win the MOM, he played 12 other ODIs
I, too, am presuming the same 3 umpires will be used. I'm interested in seeing who is 4th umpire for the first match as the 4 International Panel umpires are in Southampton the day before.

Yes, I can't see any of them travelling from Southampton to Manchester overnight and I would imagine they'll have to join some sort of "bubble"?. I wonder if they'll use a very experienced ECB Umpire, e.g. Rob Bailey, Neil Hartley.

Who’s Neil Hartley? I assume you mean Peter Hartley!
Neil Hartley was a capable all-rounder who played for Yorkshire late 70s into 80s.
Peter Hartley played for Yorkshire in mid 80s, they might have played together at some time.

I've just read on the Sky Cricket internet page that the experiment of the TV Umpire monitoring and calling front foot no-balls is being trialled in the current England v. Pakistan Test Series. It'll be interesting to see how it goes. It seemed to work OK in the recent England v. Ireland ODIs.Interesting that on one occasion, Illingworth forgot himself and called a no ball, giving half a signal before he remembered. Old habits die hard! Generally it seemed to work OK but I was always told that the umpire needed to call them loud and clear to give the batsman a chance to slog the ball, knowing he wouldn't be out but not possible with the TV umpire making the call. I assume the 'free hit' on the next ball only applies in the limited overs games.
It has happened then, Stuart Broad has been fined by the match referee for an offence that he has not contested.
I believe the Mackem ref has slightly got the appointments wrong for the ODI series. As per the ICC website only one on-field umpire and the 3rd umpire for each game has been confirmed. So it’s still possible for the likes of Saggers and Wharf to be appointed on-field for this series.

Indeed congratulations to both - they have always seemed decent umpires when I have watched them and I hope they seize their opportunity with both hands!
Incidentally, I was looking forward to watching the New Zealand cricket this winter, but I don’t seem to find anywhere that says if it will be broadcast in the UK. It is usually sky sports, but their website makes no mention of it - does anyone know?
Some appointments updated with home-appointed umpires.
Shame there is still no sign of being able to watch NZ v WI here in the UK :-(

A change for the second test between Australia and India, Rod Tucker isn’t standing. Bruce Oxenford and Paul Reiffel are the on-field umpires, Paul Wilson is the TV umpire. My thoughts are with rod and his family.
I believe Rod’s mother sadly passed away recently hence his being replaced for the second test. I’m not sure if this test is for the same reason or travel restrictions relating to him returning homeYou are correct mackem abt rod’s mother passing away, it was the day before the second test i believe.
With Paul Rieffel and Paul Wilson umpiring the third test, has there been another recent occurrence where two test players have umpired a test at the same time????
With Paul Rieffel and Paul Wilson umpiring the third test, has there been another recent occurrence where two test players have umpired a test at the same time????
Yes, Paul Reiffel, Richard Illingworth and Kumar Dharmasena are current elite umpires who have played test cricket. So any Test umpired together by any of those three would fall into that category.
Yes he did he played one test for australia on the tour to india in march 1998.With Paul Rieffel and Paul Wilson umpiring the third test, has there been another recent occurrence where two test players have umpired a test at the same time????

Paul Wilson played one test match for Oz, I think.
The Fourth Test between Australia and India was Bruce Oxenford's final international match, as he is retiring from the Elite Panel in April. Certainly a fitting way to end a good umpiring career, being given the opportunity to umpire a series in his home country.
Simon Taufel mentioned it in TV coverage here in Australia, where he acts as an umpire analyst.
And the only Elite Umpire they have is very new to the role and only done a handful of test matches! Maybe we’ll see Mr Ravi as he’s still on their International Panel I believe and has stood in many Test Matches.

S Ravi isn’t on the International Panel. India have Nitin Menon on the Elite Panel, they also have C Shamshuddin on the International Panel who has been the neutral umpire in a few ODI series.
Bangladesh v West Indies Test Series
Both Tests: Richard Illingworth (England) & Sharfuddoula (Bangladesh), TV Umpire- Gazi Sohel (Bangladesh)
Match Referee: Neeyamur Rashid Rahul (Bangladesh)
A test debut for Sharfuddoula, and interesting to see Richard Illingworth appointed in these Covid times. I’m assuming because Bangladesh have no test umpires, an exception was made for Illingworth to officiate.

This feels a strange appointment. Given Illingworth won't have officiated since August in the UK. Surely Gaffaney being in-season in his home country and with lesser COVID risks attached coming from NZ, would have been more logical. Perhaps he didn't want to go through NZ quarantine on return.

It will be interesting to see who the umpires are for the India V England tests. Correct me if I’m wrong but I think india have just 1 elite umpire now - will they use some of their international panel ones or will a couple of the England guys get a game?
I do think it’s good and wise given the circumstances to see the non elite umpires get experience in test matches at the moment. However to play devils advocate, Paul Reiffel and Richard Illingworth travelled out to Dubai for the IPL and now Alex Wharf and others have travelled to Dubai for the T10 league.
Surely a Test series of the magnitude of India v England should have international umpires instead of these franchise limited over tournaments.
A bit of nightmare for Anil Chaudhary in the TV umpires chair today.
First of all the Rohit Sharma stumping, for me there was nothing behind the line. Having said that it was extremely close, can somewhat forgive Chaudhary for giving him not out on that occasion.
However the Rahane catch, well what a shocking decision. Inexplicable for him not to follow the footage all the way through, if he had he would have seen it clearly came off Rahane’s glove and he would have been out.
Fortunately for England, both decisions weren’t that costly as both batsmen were dismissed soon after.
Unfortunately with home umpires, accusations of bias will come in regarding these decisions. It’s a shame I thought Chaudhary had a reasonable test debut on field in the first test, and Nitin Menon was outstanding in the first test match. Menon also let himself down today with poor decision to give Pant out caught behind, when there was clear daylight between bat and ball.
Hopefully just a one off bad day at the office for the umpires today!
More poor umpiring today. Can someone explain how Rohit played a shot there. Thought Joe Root was going to explode when umpire said he had??
Thought the on-field umpires were good in 3rd test (as short as it was!) - got some very tight calls correct
Chaudry seems to be a better on-field umpire than a third umpire!
Chaudry seems to be a better on-field umpire than a third umpire!Possibly because of a lack of experience as a TV umpire in the first class game. I wonder how much training the TV umpires for this series have received in comparison to their elite colleagues after being parachuted into the role at the last minute. Perhaps it would have been better for the Indian international panel umpires, who have vast experience of umpiring in Indian conditions, to do the on-field job which they have done more than adequately in trying circumstances by and large, with the elite umpire in front of the TV monitor.

Where’s Mike Burns? Thought he’d be on some of the matches….In hospital having his apendix out.
Many congratulations to Alex Wharf on his scheduled test debut - hope all goes well! Hopefully next summer umpires will be travelling again.
Watching the test match and I am simply appalled that Jarvo69 has managed to get onto the field of play for the last 3 games. How has he:
a) been allowed entry - surely the first pitch invasion should have led to a substantial ban.
b) once in the ground, been allowed to gain access to the pitch at 3 separate venues.
Shocking from security services to put the players in such danger! I hope the book is thrown at him!
Fifth test forfeited by India due to corona.England’s best performance of the series 🤪
Fifth test forfeited by India due to corona.
There was talk of the Test being carried forward into next summer when the Indians are here for a T20/ODI series, including Old Trafford.
Whether a 5 day Test can be fitted in I'm not sure.
Just to cancel today's Test would seem unfair on England, and there have been suggestions (partly denied) that India were more concerned about being covid free for the start of the IPL given the short interval between.
Fifth test forfeited by India due to corona.
I would not be surprised if this ends up not being an India forfeit. Money talks and the BCCI has loads of it.

These appointments seem to suggest that Australian umpires will officiate in The Ashes. I expect Reiffel, Tucker and Paul Wilson to umpire this series, but three umpires is very few for a five Test series. Perhaps Sam Nogajski will make his Test debut, or they may bring in someone like Gaffaney from NZ.
Excuse the formatting. I tried to bold some text but can't seem to find a way to do so!
Must say I’m slightly disappointed - was hoping to see neutral umpires resume after the world t20 but not to be. Will be interesting to see the appointments for the ashes. 4 umpires were used for the 5 test England-India series so I would assume something similar will happen in the ashes. Perhaps Gaffaney and Brown could support from New Zealand, otherwise Nogajski would seem the only other option!
It sounds bizarre but the umpire appointments are too boring - more predictable than Mike Riley 🤣
I hasten to suggest that Oxenford’s retirement might not be the only change to the elite panel!
As for non-neutral umpires, I can see absolutely no justification for it when many officials are happy to travel for lucrative IPL/PSL etc deals!
https://www.icc-cricket.com/media-releases/2570730
Confirmation from the icc board meetings that neutral officials will be returning to international cricket. Tests will have a neutral match referee and two neutral umpires, one on field and one as tv umpire. A home umpire will also be appointed by the icc to stand on field.
ODIs and T20Is will continue to have a full match official team provided from the home board.
Incidentally, Joel Wilson has also been appointed to the ICC cricket committee, suggesting he is unlikely to lose his elite panel place any time soon!

A fortunate outcome for England regarding that catch. Or is it a case of going with on field decision? Anyhow, I note that the first test pitch has been declared substandard. Rightly so, and credit should go to players for getting a result on it!

The Ashes appointments will be Ahsan Raza's 8th & 9th Test matches. He was added to the Elite Panel last March when Aleem Dar retired.
Only caught the first session. The Pope LBW was a tough call. I, alongside the commentators, thought it pitched outside leg on first viewing and therefore not a horrendous decision by any stretch of the imagination.
Unfortunately the Crawley caught behind was a very poor decision from Erasmus, who is usually one of the best!
I must say that is a very good appointment for Alex Wharf - being prepared as a replacement for Illingworth?
Sri Lanka's Raveenda Wimalasiri made his Test debut in the Second Test between Sri Lanka and Pakistan. He replaced Chris Gaffaney from Day 2 because Gaffaney has an eye infection.
That is quite peculiar - must be some reason Tucker is preferring to stay in tv chair than be on field.
I remember the game Alastair Cook got to 10,000 test runs at Durham, Aleem Dar left the field on the final day and was replaced by Tucker. Reserve umpire David Millns took over tv duties despite having no DRS experience at the time.

Cricket Australia have reported that Paul Wilson has retired as an international umpire. He will continue to umpire at the domestic level in Australia. Certainly news I was not expecting.

I guess all the travel involved and a wish to spend more time at home may have contributed to his decision.

During the SA20 Kevin Pietersen said on commentary that Marais Erasmus is off to Hyderabad to officiate the first India v England test. If this is the case, I’d suspect Erasmus will have some involvement in at least the first two tests.
I don’t think we’ve seen Chris Gaffaney and Kumar Dharmasena since the World Cup, I’d imagine they’ll also be involved.

4th Test,
I agree 5/6 are the best officials available but would have preferred Raza to Wilson. No great surprises - returns for Dharmasena and Gaffaney after the World Cup, all highly experienced umpires utilised.
On a separate note, if officials have to leave before they turn 61 (which I believe is the precedent if not a rule - happy to be corrected on this), then Erasmus, Illingworth and Tucker will be leaving fairly soon. Did wonder if they might have given experience of this intense kind of series to one of the lesser experienced umps.
Michael Graham-Smith and Sam Nogajski umpiring the third and final T20I. It seems like CA are still undecided on who will be promoted and are using this series as an experiment of some sort. First full nation T20I match for Graham-Smith, but interestingly not his T20I debut.
Surely when the ICC review the elite panel they have to drop Joel Wilson….he seems to have almost every decision he makes overturned!
I was just checking the umpire panels section on ICC to see if replacements had been named for either Paul Wilson or Paul Reynolds (they haven’t) when I saw that there has been a change to England’s international panel. Russell Warren has replaced David Millns on the list.
Huge congratulations to Warren - not a surprise given his recent domestic appointments.
