Backhouse and team watch out….

David Richardson went off injured (hamstring injury) during the Sunderland U21s game on Monday night.

Ceri Williams went off injured (some sort of arm/shoulder/collar bone injury) tonight during the Sunderland Ladies cup match.

Not much luck for officials of Sunderland games this week - speedy recovery to all!

Wasn’t there a run of games last season (IIRC) that Portsmouth home games attracted a lot of injuries to officials?

One of the assistants pulled up in the first half of Portsmouth Cheltenham back in August - he was replaced by 4O Stephen Brown who then also couldn't continue, which was followed by an announcement to the crowd and a local league ref ran the South Stand line for the remainder of the game!

The very next weekend, after sending both Joe Rafferty and Jake Forster-Caskey off in the Stevenage Pompey game, Simon Mather himself pulled up and was replaced by Stephen Finch.

Very bizarre little run!

Thought it was the start of this season, but I may be wrong there myself

You may be right….

Years ago Portman Road had a bit of a reputation for causing match officials to have to be substituted due to injury but that was often said to be down to the lushness of the grass. It wasn't Fisons territory for nothing !

Including 'Topsy' Turvey who broke his leg during a game but carried on to the end of the game regardless. A collision rather than the turf I believe.

Very good game for Backhouse at Plymouth
. If he turns up at Home Park we may have a slight delay whilst he diverts back up to the Sunderland Stadium of Light.

Andy Haines once made the trip to Plymouth from his home in Tyne & Wear for a Plymouth v Sheffield Wednesday game.

Assuming the uncovered games are being refereed by SG1s, it seems strange that top SG2 James Linington has not got a game when others have two in a full fixture list, and particularly as he is a 4O so clearly not out of action for some reason.

Changes to last weekend appointments will provide a clue.

He was replaced at Watford on Saturday and then as 4O at Chelsea on Sunday. The fact he has a 4O appointment next week suggests it may have been a minor injury or sickness and he is hopefully being eased back gently. Bizarrely he has had 6 4O appointments so far in 2024 - 4 of them in the F A Cup - and only 1 middle wheres Andy Davies 😳 has had 4 middles in the same period

Postcode rule went out of the window 7-8 years ago at least. Irrelevant where anyone lives, as long as they, or their immediate family, don't support the team then they can do the game.

We know that, but it's not sensible appointing. There are enough other officials who could have done it, while he went somewhere else. They are making a potential rod for their own back, really.

Quite an odd appointment for Ed Duckworth, he will be travelling from Preston to Cardiff to hold up the boards in the Cardiff v Preston game. Maybe, like his cricketing sister, he spends his spare time at Ewood Park and that’s the reason which allows it?

His day job meant he travels everywhere.
He was also on board-holding duties at the Cardiff v Leeds game on January 13.  While his day job takes him around the country, as an employee of the FA that country is surely England rather than Wales!

Regardless of his day job, he is (was) a resident of Preston and is covering a Preston game.

Where he could theoretically be refereeing most or all of the match.

No suggestion he would not do so even-handedly, but an unnecessary and easily avoidable position to put him in.

Also a debut on the line for Richard Woodward I believe at Watford v Leicester. Good luck to him!

I'm not familiar with Richard Woodward or where he has come from.  Perhaps you could enlighten me please Ryan?

If you watch Police Interceptors or Motorway Cops you'll see PC Woodward mentioning his secondary employment as an EFL referee as well as his main Cheshire Constabulary job.  He often works alongside a traffic officer colleague who is a rugby referee so there are plenty of sporting quotes and jokes.  Richard has been a referee for a number of years and has been a national list official for 5 years or so.

I've met him personally several times through my line of work and he's a very nice bloke.  And when i've seen him run the line at weekends i've thought him to be fair and correct with an eye for detail and discipline.  Part of the way he's trained in the day job though I suppose.

Very good game for Backhouse at Plymouth

That would be a very bad game given he lives in Cumbria.  Whereas the journey across the A69 to Sunderland should be a lot easier 😂
