World Cup Historical Record
« on: Tue 16 Feb 2021 19:12 »
Been recently turning my hand to a little side project - to catalogue each World Cup Finals Fixture ever played - and the full officiating details for each game.

This was inspired by finding out that Concetto Lo Bello refereed at a World Cup Finals (to which I was unaware).

I've started building the site here: http://worldcup.bafra77.co.uk - and have all the details in for the 1930 Finals.

Clicking on each Official in the match page (where they are highlighted in blue) - will take you through to a profile page - detailing, amongst other things, how many games they did, who played and in what capacity they officiated that fixture.

On each official's profile page (eg. http://worldcup.bafra77.co.uk/player/john-langenus/ ) - next to their name is a number.

This is the order in which they did their first game (a bit like Test Match Cricketers have on their shirts to denote in which order they debuted for their country - so Langenus was the 8th different referee to referee a World Cup Finals game.

I'll hopefully be able to pull that numbering through to 2018 eventually - which will be interesting to see the results.

Great website.

Although not my field of expertise I know the World Cup finals are a very popular and already well researched topic. Very interested to know your sources - Are you just using the data readily available on the FIFA website or are you cross checking where you can?

Whilst having a quick look I did notice a name that seemed familiar in the 1934 Brazil v Spain match - Ettore Carmanati, who is listed as a linesman.
There was also an Ettore Carmanati who was an active referee in the 1960's.
A quick bit of googling and I found a different forename for the 1934 linesman - Mario  ??

http://calcio-seriea.net/arbitri/1934/1/
https://www.fifa.com/worldcup/archive/italy1934/matches/match/1111/#match-info
https://www.worldfootball.net/referee_summary/mario-carminati/3/2/wm-1934-in-italien/
https://it.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ettore_Carminati

Not sure if there is a simple explanation or if you need to look further into this.

I noticed on the FIFA site is that for the 1974 Zaire - Scotland match they use different country codes GER and FRG.  The country code of GER wasn't used in 1974 and both officials should be FRG.  It may seem a bit nit-picking but I thought I would point this out.

https://www.fifa.com/worldcup/archive/germany1974/matches/match/2176/#match-info

They also refer to the games in the 1934 series in Milan as being played at the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza, when in fact it wasn't named this until 1980!
UEFA also have an annoying habit of doing this with stadium names. It is good to see that you have the correct name - Stadio San Siro

I wish you well with your project and I will keep an eye out as it progresses.

I'm cross referencing several sources - including newspaper archives and my own knowledge whenever possible.

Am also labelling nations as they were at the time - so for example the Czech Republic and Czechoslovakia are separated and Indonesia are up as the "Dutch East Indies"

So - the full list of Referees in the order they refereed their first World Cup game is now up on the site.

http://worldcup.bafra77.co.uk/all-time-officials/chronological-list-of-referees/

Up until the end of the 2018 tournament - there have been 381 different ones.

A few milestones:

#1 - Domingo Lombardi - Uruguay - 1930
#50 - Bill Ling - England - 1954
#100 - Jim Finney - England - 1966
#150 - Sergio Gonella - Italy - 1978
#200 - Valeri Butenko - Soviet Union - 1986
#250 - Rodrigo Badilla - Costa Rica - 1994
#300 - Óscar Ruiz - Colombia - 2002
