A contemporary, match-by-match, analysis of the officiating at FIFA World Cup 1986 can be found on the link below - I will try to update the blog as often as possible, so far we are through the first six matches. Any engagement would be most welcome!

Yes, thank you Mikael, most interesting. A few familiar names including our own George Courtney but quite a number which I don't recall at all. No specialist ARs or Hawkeye / VAR which clearly did it for the Australian referee!

Now nineteen games through, the last two will (I think!) be of interest to RtR users:

England vs. Morocco - tough game in the heat for Paraguay's Gabriel González, who famously sent off Ray Wilkins for throwing the ball at him

Mexico vs. Paraguay - George Courtney whistled 78(!!) fouls in this game, still a WC record; extremely challenging game for the Englishman who awarded a very late penalty at the end

The other seventeen matches are interesting as well ;)

Thank you again Mikael for another fascinating read. I'm not sure I can agree with you re Gabriel Gonzalez (England v Morocco). Even allowing for the heat, I never thought he looked fit and his performance was at best mediocre. But maybe my assessment was sullied by having to sit up until the small hours to watch England stutter to a 0-0 draw v mediocre opposition!
