I recall Keith Styles was not best pleased with his knife-wielding linesman! Keith refereed several times at Anfield over the years, so it is not possible to say which match it was and whether the linesman was new to the list or coming up to retirement. As you say, Keith was a small dapper man and a good ref. I think I saw him just once - Palace v Chelsea in Div 1 in Nov 1971 and he did well. I can find no trace of Keith on olddeagle's list of Final officials, so assume that he never made it to Wembley. Upton's shows that he refereed the 2nd leg of the Anglo-Scottish Final in Dec 1978, bizarrely between Burnley and Oldham, but that is imo scant reward for 14 seasons good service on the FL refs list.

He did referee the 1977 Charity Shield between Liverpool and Manchester United so that would seem to be his biggest honour.

Most interesting mande70.  Some fine old names there representing a huge wealth of refereeing experience. I recall all of the gentlemen mentioned apart from Mr Laing

Brilliant, thanks mande70. I'll have a detailed look at these over the next few days and provide some comments and/or fill some gaps if I can.

yep when you see it put out as teams and what ref theyhad per match it makes for interesting reading.

interesting that palace had burtenshaw a few times that season, one of the reports didn't praise him to highly, saying he was incident prone through out his career. the one really good match he had that season was when palace knocked arsenal out the league cup.

interesting that palace had burtenshaw a few times that season, one of the reports didn't praise him to highly, saying he was incident prone through out his career. the one really good match he had that season was when palace knocked arsenal out the league cup.

Yes, Norman Burtenshaw was a regular visitor to Selhurst Park and was usually welcome there. He was probably the fittest referee around at the time, and until top referees became full time professionals, I can only think of John Martin matching him for fitness. He was a character and I recall him joining in with the applause when Palace legend John Jackson pulled off a top drawer save in the drawn League cup tie v Arsenal. The replay of the same game at Highbury saw Norman in action again and was well remembered for a bizarre incident when Arsenal goalie Bob Wilson picked up the ball and was immediately challenged by a Palace player. It was a nothing situation but Bob then buried the ball (still in his hands) into the Palace player's face and the Arsenal players looked aghast as Norman quite rightly awarded a penalty. The score was 1-0 at the time and Palace's ace penalty taker Bobby Tambling duly made it 2-0, a final score which ultimately deprived Arsenal of the League, FA Cup and League Cup treble.

Jack Taylor refereed the earlier League Cup tie v Rochdale and it had to be said that he was utterly hopeless that night, a very rare off night for the great man.

Bill Castle, 2/9/70 CP v Blackpool brought about the famous headline "Queen in brawl at the Palace" when he (and he alone with his linesmen) failed to spot Gerry Queen's uppercut to a Blackpool player's jaw. Gerry was already starting to walk off before he realised that Bill had no idea what had gone on as the Blackpool player lay prostrate on the ground. How we laughed, particularly when Gerry scored a late winner in a game which turned out to have been fairly crucial at the end of the season.

Sorry, I still cannot plug any gaps, but I will keep thinking! And thanks again for this, mande70.

Picture of a unknown referee at Portsmouth v Luton in April 1972. Norman Paget of Coventry was listed in the programme as referee but the pictured referee is not him:

Yes, I would go along with Don Biddle of Bristol. Timing and geography are both correct for Don. A senior police officer if my recollections are correct.

Thanks for the replies - it is Don Biddle. The red herring was the confusion with Luton's match at Portsmouth - the pictured game was a week earlier at home to Blackpool whose keeper was a young John Burridge. A picture of Don from a Wolves match in 1973 clearly shows the resemblance to the referee of the Luton-Blackpool game:

Don should have stuck to the more traditional referee's uniform as he wore in 1972. The one he is pictured wearing in 1973 does him no favours at all. I remember those outfits; they were ugly and uncomfortable in equal measure.

John 'Budgie' Burridge, now there's a name from the past. 768 games for 34 clubs (some more than once) in 29 years, including 88 games for the Palace, and a popular figure whilst he was at Selhurst Park.  ;D

One of my favourite refs of his time. A detective chief inspector I believe, specialising in finger prints.

Looking for the name of the ref in the middle of this picture, from an Anglo Scottish Cup tie in 1976.
