Here's a picture of a referee from a Fulham game from August 1977 - opponents unknown. Although the image is very clear it's not someone I recognise. [ Guests cannot view attachments ]

Looks a bit like Darryl Reeves (Uxbridge) to me...…….but then he wouldn't have got a Fulham game in those days unless perhaps it was a friendly.

It's not at all how I remember Ray Toseland ( who was a very regular visitor to Portman Road, does anyone else remember his rather languid/floppy run? ) but then my memory plays awful tricks these days. My first thought was Darryl Reeves but it is surely right that he wouldn't have been appointed to a competitive Fulham match unless, perhaps, it was a London derby.

Of course, being in August it might have been a pre-season friendly match

Darryl Reeves seems the likeliest suggestion so far - he did seem to have a slightly bigger build than this referee but there is certainly some similarity and the referee does quite young with quite full hair. A possible clincher is the "unzipped" cut of his shirt which bears clear similarity with this picture of him from around a year earlier:

As regards a Fulham appointment the game seems likeliest to have been against Orient or perhaps Chelsea which would have made him a potential appointment.

I am apparently not authorised to see attachments although I can't think why not. I am over 18. Can anyone help please?

I managed to see the attachments this morning but now also have a note saying I am not allowed to see attachments. A gremlin in the site perhaps. It is going to take a bit of time to iron out a few wrinkles but I am grateful for all that is being done to keep RTR going.

I've now been able to access the picture. This photo appeared in a Fulham v Charlton match programme in August 1977 and showed Terry Bullivant in action v Chelsea. The game v Chelsea was played the previous April and the programme (via LF's v good Fulham programme thread) indicates that the referee was Tom Bune from Billingshurst, with linesmen D S Bone and R L Woolben. Not sure whether this is helpful or whether this could possibly be someone other than Tom, but over to you for comment.

Following on from my previous post, I note that Fulham also played Chelsea in the Anglo- Scottish Cup in August 1977 just before the season started. Referee is shown as Clive White of Harrow although I am not sure whether the guy pictured is him. Perhaps Darryl Reeves replaced him for some reason.

It's certainly a mystery. I think the picture may be mis-captioned in the Fulham programme and is actually from a game v Orient - an opponent can be partially seen in the background and the trim on the kit (particularly the socks) seems to fit Orient more than Chelsea. Even if it is versus Orient that doesn't help much as the clubs played each other three times at Craven Cottage in various competitions that month! None of the billed referees for those games or the one versus Chelsea seems to resemble this man. Darryl Reeves seems more likely but I'm not convinced about him either. If it's not him or any of the listed referees I don't know who it could be.

Here is a picture from 1966 - Leeds v Fulham. Referee isn't known but looks a little like Arthur Jones. Muddy pitches like this one aren't seen too much these days!

Yes, it certainly does look like A W S . I would strongly concur. He was a very fine referee who probably deserved more in the way of honours than he received.
