Interesting positioning from Mr Warner. He appears to be well into the goal area looking out onto the whole field of play, a position a referee would be extremely unlikely to take up these days.

Mike Warner two year F.L. stint

Presumably one of those not deemed good enough after their two year trial

Made the papers three times

12.04.80 Reading v Grimsby - denied Reading pen
23.08.80 Preston v West Ham - denied West Ham pen
14.04.81 Swindon v Millwall - whistle happy & long stoppages for minor injuries

I recall press comment on a particularly dire game and performance from Mr Warner at Stamford Bridge in Div 2. The game was v Bristol City on 27/12/80 and it ended 0-0.

Positioning - a corner?

May well be. When I first started refereeing it was quite customary to take up a position near the goal line but usually outside the goal area. Even with corners, today a referee would position him/herself outside the penalty area somewhere alongside the D

He was lucky to get to Stamford Bridge in such a short career. Those were the days !

Most likely. Are there many other 2 year triallists who failed to stay on the National List ? I can recall Bidmead, Dobson, Penrose and Ireland  though I do not know the definite reason for all of them.

A very quick look at Upton indicates about 110 two year stints 1946-2013

The referee, whom we are assuming is Ray Aldous, perfectly displays the three white triangles which were so common at that time, consisting of the left and right ends of the white collar together with the white T shirt.

David Wells is not someone whom I remember at all but I have to agree that the photograph, even though he is distant, does portray great dapperness. In those days referees who were particular about their appearance always boiled their white laces and the front of their shorts had an ironed crease on which you could cut your finger !

Hi Whistleblower.  Yes that is my Grandad -  David Wells.  Thankyou for posting this.  If you have any other photos of him please let me know :)  Thankyou.

I was watching the tributes to Franny Lee on the NW news tonight. Four referees featured in FL incidents:

FL engaging in a fight with Norman Hunter. Referee was definitely Derek Nippard from Dorset
FL demonstrating George Best 'diving' in an incident which led to him being booked for fouling George. Back view of referee only, but as he was adjusting his lock of hair at the time, I'm sure it had to be Ray Tinkler of Boston.
FL scoring a great goal for Derby, I think the ref was John Gow of Swansea but I cannot be sure
FL scoring a penalty. The referee (on the right side of the diagonal) was bent over almost horizontal with the pitch, not something you would see now. I think it could have been John Hunting of Leicester but again cannot be sure.

Memories of one of England's football greats. RIP Franny.

Who more qualified than Francis Lee to demonstrate the art of diving?
