This one ?

Ken Burns definitely. The other photo is Ron Challis.

Whilst it is ironic that Kenny Burns was the player in the Ron Challis photograph ?

Not as ironic as you might think as the link I posted was from a search for "Ken Burns" so it brought up both the referee and the player

I was watching The Big Match Revisited on Saturday, mainly because the main match was Palace v Nottingham Forest in Div 1 on 8th December 1979. Ref was Alan Robinson (Hants). Also featured was Ipswich's 4-0 rout of Man City, ref John Martin of Alton. How times have changed!

The third match was Middlesbrough v Southampton, also in Div 1 on 8/12/79, and featured a bizarre penalty incident when an unknown ref gave a penalty to Boro for a foul which looked outside the area and then disallowed a tap-in goal following a rebound off the goalie because the goalie had moved off his line before the kick was taken. The kick was retaken and the goalie saved it, and Boro lost 0-1. A bit of a 'Lee Mason at Brighton' moment. No real idea who the ref was and D Owen of The Wirrall was the only one who came to mind. Can anyone confirm who the ref was - Boro v Southampton, Div 1, 8/12/79? Just interested, thanks.

Thank you JT, a good guess on my part it seems, given that I never saw the guy in live action!

This one ?
The linesman on the right of Ken Burns (left of picture) is Len Bates of Aldridge/Walsall, I was in the same RA as him in the 1970s.

Afternoon everyone

I'm trying to ascertain who was the referee for the League game between Blackpool and Everton on Wednesday 23rd April 1958 (Everton won 1:0)

Several of us Everton stattos have been researching the 'lesser' recorded data for all Everton matches (referees, unused substitutes, etc) and this is the only post-war match were we don't have the referee's name.  We have 35 pre-WW2 matches outstanding as well, but we're looking to get the post-war stuff completed first.

Hoping someone can help us out on this one.

Many thanks in advance

Steve

Why is this particular referee so elusive, Steve?

Presumably it was a change from the matchday programme, or else you would probably already have a name by now.

And which newspaper sources have already been checked?

Can anyone help to identify this referee from a Burnley match at Shrewsbury Town on 01.01.1980.

The newspaper articles and match reports I've seen don't mention a name, and I've not been able to obtain a copy of the matchday programme to check.

I thought that the image might have been distinctive enough, even though it's from the back, for somebody to identify?

[The image is from the Burnley Civic Trust website: https://www.bcthic.org/ which has some excellent football related images from yesteryear (from Burnley games, predominantly)

Nice to see a photo again. I took a look through Upton's for 1979/80 and eliminated those I was fairly sure it couldn't be eg Lester Shapter or Keith Hackett. I came up with the following names, all of whom could geographically have been at Gay Meadow in Jan 1980 - Bates, Nolan, D Owen, Peck, Salmon, Spencer, Tyldesley and Warner. Sorry but further than that, I'm afraid I cannot help!

Thanks for trying to narrow it down. I was hoping that his bald patch might possibly have been a particularly distinguishing feature, although on reflection, perhaps not.

I might try to see if I can find any other stills or videos of the referees, which you have listed for comparison.

Thank you, John. Much appreciated.

This may well have been his only Burnley game, in that case, as I don't have too many other gaps around this time.

The only other Warner I can see in my match database is an Alf Warner, of Nottingham, who took charge of both matches v Aston Villa in 1920/21 (during Burnley's 30 record match unbeaten run), as well as the Charity Shield match v Spurs at the end of that season.

Very good to see a photograph from yesteryear. I enjoyed our " name the Ref" debates on RTR. As for Mr Warner, he has passed completely under my radar ( perhaps not surprisingly if he was on the National List for only two seasons ) and I have to confess I had never even heard of his name until now. I wonder why his tenure was so short ?  Injury, incompetence or infelicitous personal circumstances ?
