Who is the referee ?

Who is the referee ?

This webpage relates to Les Bradd being inducted into Hall of Fame of Notts County FC in 2019 :-

https://www.nottscountyfc.co.uk/news/2019/october/les-bradd-hall-of-fame-020919/

The photograph thereon shows Bradd attempting a diving header for the Magpies.

There is no information as to the date of the game, the oppostion or the referee who is clearly visible in the centre of the photograph.

The black and white photograph probably dates from about 1970 or thereabouts.

But who is the referee ?

The picture also features on the cover of Bradd's autobiography "Far Post" (2017) which might give details

I don't have a copy of the autobiography but looking through the Nottingham Football Post on the British Newspaper Archive, it's clearly a home match at Meadow Lane (the old County Stand in the background) and in winter (bare trees to the right), and a candidate would be the match v Peterborough on 30 Jan 71. The players' kits as seen in the photos on the front page and page 8 look very much like those in the posted picture, and one on page 8 could have been taken in the same attack and shows what appears to look very much like the referee in the posted picture. If so, according to the report we are looking at John Rice (Leyland, Lancs) but as I never saw him I've no way of knowing if that's right. No doubt someone will be able to confirm or refute this.

Very interesting, olddeagle, and excellent detective work. Jack Rice was about the only name that came to mind, but I did not feel sufficiently convinced to make that suggestion, particularly as he was still a supplementary referee in 70-71 and 71-72.

Yes, I would go with Jack Rice. By the time he refereed Liverpool v Man City in April 1977 (one of his final games and on YouTube), his hair was a bit greyer but he had the same hairstyle. So yes, I think it is Jack.
