Spectacles 1983

On page 92 of the old site, post 916 of 11 January 2016 refers to an England Scotland Schoolboys International 1983. The question concerns a linesman wearing spectacles.

This is M J V (Mervyn) Hughes of Headington, Oxford, who at that time was a referee on the Hellenic League and linesman on the Southern League. The appointment was probably influenced by him being a primary school teacher.

Mervyn always both lined and refereed in spectacles.

Thanks for this information Timbo. I have to say I am a little surprised that Merv was wearing spectacles on the Hellenic and Southern Leagues. He was presumably a Class 1 referee and my understanding was always that Class 1s were not allowed to officiate in spectacles. And I think this was national rather than just my County. There were a surprising number of referees (and players) on my contributory leagues who wore contact lenses, and more than once, play had to be stopped after a player, or on one occasion the referee, lost a lens and a frantic search for it ensued. There were also a surprising number of players and officials who wore specs in the board room / lounge after a game. But spectacles during a game? No, I don't think I ever saw that outside of the local parks.

I agree it was extremely unusual. He was a Class 1, and was in the middle on a supply league and lined on a contributory league in small, round, thick glasses. There was some eyesight issue that prevented him wearing lenses. He officiated at these levels in spectacles for at least eight years of which i am aware. I think that the spectacles prevented any further progress up the pyramid.
