Soccer Review 1-22, season 1965-66

This edition has a photograph of a referee on its front cover, as well as an article about refereeing standards.

But who is the referee ?

Small-ish guy, my complete guess would be Kevin Howley or perhaps Jim Carr.

If you could just ask the gentleman to turn 90 degrees to his right, Timbo, we would have a better chance. My initial guess was Ken Dagnall, but a guess is all it is.

As we are going back some 55 years, we might well - very sadly - be asking the gentleman to turn in his grave !

Danny Lyden?

Yes, quite possibly, he does bear a passing resemblance to Danny who is pictured on YouTube before the start of the epic Colchester v Leeds FA Cup tie in 1971. However as JCFC has pointed out, we need the gentleman to turn and face the camera, and even with all the tools available to our beloved bmb, I don't think we are going to be able to achieve that!  ;D

Doing a bit of detective work to try to identify the ref here, I seem to remember that the Review when it began was published in the midlands and the photos often featured identifiably midland grounds. This one looks to me like the covered stand opposite the main stand at Filbert Street. If so, and this was issue 22, we could be looking at a Leicester match from the first half of the 65/6 season, up to early January. From the reports in the Nottingham Football Post the following refereed Leicester's home Saturday matches up to early January-

21/8/65 v Liverpool-N C Burtenshaw
4/9/65 v Sunderland- G D Roper
18/9/65 v Leeds-W M Holian
2/10/65 v Northampton-K Dagnall
16/10/65 v Burnley-D A Corbett
30/10/65 v Arsenal-R Harper
13/11/65 v Man Utd-L Callaghan
27/11/65 v WBA-J Parkinson
11/12/65 v Sheffield Weds-R A Paine
1/1/66 v Stoke-K Styles

It certainly isn't Burtenshaw or Callaghan, and I believe Harper was bald. Dagnall has been suggested above but I think he was a bit thinner on top than the man here.  Roper was a bit thinner-faced I think. So it could be Holian, Corbett, Parkinson, Paine or Styles?
(Unless of course it isn't at Leicester at all, or if it was, the picture was from the year before!)
Perhaps that will stir a memory or two?

Corbett was one of the tallest refs around at the time, so not him, and I am fairly sure it is not Paine or Styles. No idea I'm afraid on Holian or Parkinson.

I've been trying to work out the location. Hadn't thought of the East Stand/ Popular side at Filbert Street. I think it looks too big a terrace but might be wrong. The buildings behind it also don't look quite right from that angle. Haven't come up with an alternative yet though.
