Like AT, I can only recall one occasion when the referee at a game I was at had to be replaced.  It was at Villa Park but I can't  remember who Villa were playing or who the referee was but it must have been in the 1970s.  The senior linesman who took over was V. H Wood of Northampton, who appeared at Villa games two or three times a season.

What I do remember was that the replaced referee had not endeared himself to the home crowd and that Mr Wood seemed a far more competent official and I was quite surprised that he never made the national referees list. The other thing of course was that it was before the days of fourth officials so a volunteer from the crowd had to be sought as a replacement linesman and a delay ensued whilst he was found a 'neutral' tracksuit to change into.

I wonder if someone can help with a point that has been bugging me on this topic, from way back. On 27 August 1960 Chelsea drew 3-3 with Wolves at Stamford Bridge (thanks to a brilliant hat trick by Jimmy Greaves).  The match report in the People (on the British Newspaper Archive) gives the ref as "T Hanger (Northants)", as does the excellent Chelsea history site http://www.bounder.friardale.co.uk/index.htm. I can't currently find a programme on eBay that shows the teams page, but the report in the Times archive gives the referee as Tommy Dawes. Also on the BNA is the Kensington Post report dated 2 September which refers to "deputy referee Mr T Hanger". The "T" in these reports is an error probably stemming from the programme-the man in question must have been J A Hanger of Rushden, Northants who was a FL linesman from the mid 50s to 1961/2 and a Southern League referee from the early 50s to about the same time. I believe his first name was Jeffrey and he can be seen doing a Boxing Day friendly on https://www.rushdenheritage.co.uk/leisure/Rushden-Amateurs.html. (Scroll down to the third photo on the page). I saw him a few times doing Bedford Town matches.  I think he must have done the Chelsea v Wolves match from the start rather than coming on to replace Dawes but I can't discover what happened to the famous Norfolk Smiler on this occasion. Anyway it must have been a great day for Jeff Hanger, probably the top Div 1 match of the day and probably the most memorable of his career. And the Kensington Post thought he was right to disallow two Chelsea goals!

I can't help on whether Mr. Hanger refereed all or part of the game but can say that Tommy Dawes had a number of games where he went off injured or ill so it is possible that happened to him during this game (or even before it). It's also possible that he wasn't able to reach the game for some other reason and in an era long before fourth officials the senior linesman would have had to step up with a volunteer taking his place on the line. TV coverage or even some match photos might help solve the mystery but this was before televised football and match photos were in short supply although a picture or two of that game might have appeared in Chelsea's next home programme.

Chris Foy was replaced by Anthony Taylor during a game in 2014 between Newcastle & Swansea after being hit in the face by the ball.

Not during a match but still a change to be noted

Southport v Shrewsbury Tue 9th Jan 1962 F.A.Cup

Tom Reynolds (South Stanley) was taken ill on the way to the match
so senior linesman Ken Hesketh (Chester) officiated

Hesketh had been on the lino list for 13 years at that point
but never made it to the referees list

I do remember Andy Davies replacing Jarnail Singh in an AFCB game when he was still an AR. Mr Singh had not endeared himself to the home or away crowd at the time and Andy both entered and exited the pitch to a standing ovation from both sets of fans!  Andy told me many years later that it was one of his most surreal moments at a football match!!
Hajrá Lilák. Csak a Kispest. Hajrá Magyarok! Hajrá játékvezetői csapat! Soha ne add fel. Nincs sárga kérem!!! No Chris Kavanagh doesn't live in Ashton or even in the Greater Manchester area!!

Given Mr Davies performances in recent years I suspect he hasn’t had a standing ovation since! 🤪

10.04.1993 Manchester United v Sheffield Wednesday

Manchester United claimed their first title since 1967 with an 88th minute winner in a match that had 7 minutes 16 seconds added time which was the start of the "Fergie Time" myth. Alex Ferguson later watched it back and said there should have been 12 minutes.

John Hilditch took over after 60 minutes

John Martin was due to referee the game but he had been injured and replaced by Mike Peck.
15 minutes into the second half, Peck injured his Achilles and John Hilditch took over.

"The replacement was from the local F.A., so we took our time changing over to give him a good chance to compose himself.
While that was happening, Mike offered me his watch but I turned him down because I'd been keeping time myself and I carried on using my own."

19.10.2003

Northern Premier League

Bishop Auckland v Prescot Cables

Referee was injured and line took over but with no fourth official, and a local volunteer not deemed up to standard, the match was to be abandoned

So spectator Pat Partridge (then aged 70) took on the role and the match was completed (1-1)

Partridge was the referee for Arsenal v Liverpool on 16th September 1972 when one of his linesmen tore a muscle and Jimmy Hill took over.

Interesting,John Treleaven.Re.Southport-Shrewsbury,

My earliest Bradford P.A.programme[mid fifties]has referee KG HESKETH of Southport-he later moved along the coast nearer Preston,to Banks.Tall and balding-no other memories!
I am glad Tommy Reynolds visited other grounds-he seemed to be semi-permanent at P.A.

19.08.1989

Manchester United v Arsenal

David Hutchinson - start of his final season

Pulled a muscle after 34 minutes and replaced by line

Reports differ between J.J.Richardson (Woolton, Liverpool) and J.Caulkin (Stoke)

However Liverpool Echo interviewed Richardson about it, he was back as a North West Counties ref the following week

It was definitely John Richardson. Media reports on who took over in these instances need to be treated with caution and sometimes get the wrong official so a visual identification or interview as you've found are the best guides.
