Minor detail - Chatham is 'over the border' in Kent.

If D E Clarke is the Football League referee from Accrington, who was, I believe, dropped from the list in the course of the season in question, (a discrepancy in an expenses claim comes to mind), then I was under the impression that his name was David rather than Derek. There was a birth in Haslingden in 1943 for David E Clarke, which could well be him.

Yes, I recall him appearing on MOTD during his brief career as 'David Clarke'. Tallish, fair-haired chap if my recollections are correct.

I don't recall the Chobham-based Maurice Hazzard at all, but he was over the other side of the Surrey County to me, so happy to accept Chobham rather than Chatham.

Referee Retrospective has a photo with this caption - David Clarke at a Birmingham-Leicester match in Dec 1979. A sheet metal engineer from Accrington he became a FL linesman in 1975 aged only 30 and became a supplementary ref two years later. He progressed to the full list a year later where he had a two year spell.

John Hunting was also involved in tennis officiating and became an I.T.F. Silver Badge (i.e. 2nd level) Referee (the one that places the matches, not the one in the chair - the umpire) His son Anthony was one of the top British juniors and played in the junior events at Wimbledon in 1986

Is the bearded linesman Roger Dilkes ? Upton lists him as becoming a Football League referee in 1983 so the timing is possibly right. Upton gives his last season as 1996/97. I had thought he refereed well into the 21st century. Memory plays such strange tricks.

Could well be but I always thought Roger was a small guy and certainly shorter than the guy in the photo. I thought of Trelford Mills or Mark Scott (who had a beard at one time) but timing is not right for either of them.

The programme (1st Dec 1979) gives A.D.Blake (Bridgnorth) & A.Rhodes (Walsall)

But I don't know which is which

A.D.Blake is given as Arthur (11.11.77) but no bmd to fit that, Tony (27.2.78) and Alan (18.3.78)

My imediate instinct, too, was  "That looks like Trelford Mills," but it obviously is not as by that time he was an established FL referee.

As Whistleblower said, memory plays strange tricks.

Thank you for letting us know. I don't think either of these gentlemen made it on to the National List of Referees.
