Was R T E Langdale definitely known as Dick? His middle name was Thomas (I don't know what the E was) and I have memories of his being referred to as Tommy. That may, of course, be a wrong guess by commentators or equally my fallible memory.

Preston v Burnley was P-P on Wed 26 Dec - referee was Tom Seymour (Wakefield)
but he was replaced for the re-arrangement on Tue 1 Jan by Bill Evans
as Seymour was scheduled to officiate at Middlesbrough v Bolton
but Seymour P-P that one too due to four inches of snow

Richard "Dick" Thomas E. Langdale (Darlington) 1916-93

That does not really answer my question. I have subsequently had a look at the Burnley workbook that appeared somewhere on here, and he is listed there as Tommy.

Richard Thomas Elwell Langdale
Birth registered Q4 1916 in Sedgefield
Mother's maiden name was Elwell

For some reason the digitised GRO registers have his surname as Laugdale whereas the Birth Index has it correct as Langdale
