Sources state Leeds but no birth registrations match that

Only Aylesbury or Cockermouth

Perhaps he did not want the latter beside his name?

He certainly started refereeing in Rotherham before moving to Leeds in 1986. I was under the impression he was raised in Rotherham as well but he may have been born elsewhere.

According to Wikipedia, Mike Riley was born in Leeds. The source of that is an old (10+ years) newspaper article from when David Moyes criticised his appointment to a Manchester United FA Cup game as a replacement for the then unwell Steve Bennett.

Thanks but as stated above that is almost certainly incorrect, once it gets put down it gets repeated

Wiki appears to have many places of residence incorrectly as their birth place too
