got a quandry, 27/03/70 papers say newcastle v derby ref was r.capey

coventry telegraph and  sports argus both say he refereed the huddersfield v coventry match. who to believe lol ::)

on another note, 3 refs found for 71/72

29/01/1972      Leicester City      -   Stoke City   G Kew
04/03/1972      Newcastle United   -   Leicester City   R Mathewson
18/03/1972      Derby County      -   Leicester City   V James

Good work mande70. As regards the Roy Capey conundrum on 27 March 1971 sometimes match programmes can help resolve the problem but not in this instance as both list him as referee, albeit with different linesmen. When in doubt I would tentatively lean towards the verdict of a local newspaper as it's more likely to get the details right for its local club. That's no guarantee of course and the only real proof would be a picture (or more rarely TV highlights) of the referee from the game but as we know most match photos don't feature the referee. If I were a betting man I'd go for him refereeing the Coventry game but wouldn't be surprised if he were actually at Newcastle!

Southampton v Norwich (4.11.1972) was refereed by John Gow.

Newcastle v Tottenham on Wednesday 30th August 1972 was refereed by Keith Styles. What could easily confuse the researcher is that the match programme gives the date as "Wednesday 26th August". Notably the linesmen for this game were George Courtney and Colin Seel who went on to have 32 seasons on the full Referees List between them. Given that Keith Styles himself went on to have 14 seasons as a Football League ref this makes 46 seasons between the three of them and I suspect very few refereeing combinations can match that.

Why do we believe that Southampton hosted Stoke City on 30 January 1970 ?

A search of "The Times Digital Archive 1785-2013" suggests that 30 January 1970 was a Friday. There is no mention of this game, but on Saturday 31 January 1970, the First Division fixtures included :-

Tottenham Hotspur v Southampton

Stoke City v Leeds United, 3.15pm

The Times of Monday 2 February 1970 carries reports on :-

Tottenham Hotspur 0 Southampton 1, referee D Pugh (Chester)

Stoke City 1 Leeds United 1, referee P R Walters (Somerset)

I access "The Times Digital Archive 1785-2013" via the Oxfordshire Libraries website, which grants me unlimited use, free of charge, at home, when I log-in with a library membership number.

I believe that this is widely available free of charge, at home, via other library services.

It is useful for this sort of thing.

Southampton v Stoke was 27 Dec 1969

Plenty of copies on ebay but none showing the team page, BNA does not have a full report either

I think the typo is the year rather than the date. Southampton played Stoke on 30th January 1971 (rather than 1970), and this is confirmed on the 11v11 site. This site is very good for checking past games from the earliest times, just key in the two clubs you wish to check. Southampton 2 Stoke 1 but unfortunately no indication who refereed the game (this only started to be included in the 1990s).

The Programme for Southampton v Stoke on 30/1/71 is currently on Ebay. Referee was Jim Finney.

Ron Challis refereed that game.
