John W. Paterson (Linlithgow, Bothwell, Scotland)
« on: Fri 08 Oct 2021 15:15 »
Obituary in Scottish Football Historian received today

John W. Paterson, one of Scotland's leading referees in the 1960s and 1970s died on 24th August 2021, aged 92

Promoted to Class 1 in 1961-62 while living in Lithlingow (20 miles W of Edinburgh) he moved to Bothwell (9 miles ESE of Glasgow) the following year

The statutory retirement age forced him to stop at the end of 1977-78

He was on the FIFA list of elite referees for 13 years and the UEFA list for 12, during which he took charge of semi-finals in the European and UEFA cups

He officiated at the 1976 Montreal Olympics and took charge of the Celtic v Dundee United Scottish Cup Final in 1974

When the Glasgow F.A. organised a match against the Football League at Hampden to celebrate the Queen's Silver Jubilee in 1977, John won the ballot of the local referee's association members. One of his linesmen was Brian McGinlay who recalled "a lovely man and an absolute gentleman"

I recall that during his time as a Scottish League referee A D Fleming was listed as coming from Banknock, which would appear to be between Kilsyth and Denny.

AD Fleming, (Drew Fleming) was originally from Banknock but due to his work with the Civil Service also lived for periods of time in Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Sadly Drew recently passed away and his funeral took place yesterday.

Kilmarnock Rotary Club

Weekly Meeting

with Drew Fleming - visitors welcome

Thu, Nov 15th 2018 at 6:30 pm - 8:00 pm

My Life in Refereeing.

Drew was a football referee and as the title suggests he will be telling us of his experiences.

Kilmarnock Rotary Club were entertained recently by retired football referee Drew Fleming. In a very amusing and interesting talk Drew described his career as a referee from school days to the highest levels of national and international football. Spanning decades, and mentioning some legendary footballers, Drew gave the view from ‘behind the whistle’ in grounds and stadiums from humble parks to world famous theatres of football.  Professional skill and knowledge, as well as a thick skin, are requirements of a referee, along with a well-developed sense of humour. Drew’s numerous anecdotes were appreciated by all.

As background Drew had told us : -

“I joined the Stirlingshire Referees Association in my final year at Kilsyth Academy and spent the next three years in the Stirlingshire Secondary Juvenile League. From then I moved through the Junior and senior grades before an Achilles injury forced me to retire –at age 35!

I was then appointed as a referee Supervisor, assessing performances and acting as a liaison between local Referee Associations and the Scottish Football Association. This involved me in a number of areas including Glasgow, Stirlingshire, Renfrewshire and Lanarkshire, with some specific involvements elsewhere also.

When I retired from my mainstream job (Careers Service Inspector) I became additionally involved in UEFA matches as a Referee Liaison Officer looking after teams of officials coming to Scotland  for UEFA matches from the time of their arrival until seeing them off the day after the match. I reached the retiring age for both SFA and UEFA duties simultaneously because of age limits (now abolished!) and for the past seven years have operated as a  Development Advisor in Junior football , where there is no age limit!”
