John "Jack" Hemmings, of Netherfield Road, Somersall, Chesterfield, has died at Chesterfield Royal Hospital, aged 89.
A lifelong resident of Chesterfield, he was a retired schoolteacher.
A former football league referee (Football League Linesman), Mr. Hemmings was a long time player and later president of Chesterfield Barbarians Cricket Club. An active member of St. Thomas' Church, he loved foreign holidays, football, cricket and was a member of Hardwick Probus Club.
During the Second World War he was held as a prisoner of war in Poland for five years.
Mr. Hemmings leaves a widow, Mary (nee Massey), and a son, Mark.
Hemmings was appointed a F.L. linesman in 1955.
