Well here is an offering which should keep some of you going for at least ...... 10 minutes! It is a domino quiz, with the last letter of each surname forming the first letter of the next surname. Thus Wallace would be followed by Edge and so on, until question 21, the last letter of which forms the first letter of Q1, and you've come full circle. All are surnames of refs in Upton's from 1946 to the present. One current ref does not yet appear in my edition and one has a slightly different spelling to that in Upton's but the same pronunciation. The number of letters in each surname is in brackets.

Don't worry if you cannot get some answers and complete the circle, it is only intended as a bit of fun and there are no prizes, not even virtual ones!

Please don't post your answers on this thread. PM them to me if you like or keep them handy and I will publish the answers in the next day or two. Good luck and keep safe!

1. Life of -----------  (5)
2. The Redditch card shark (5)
3. 'Ooh Betty!' (7)
4. Lincolnshire family members? (10)
5. Old and -------- (3)
6. England's only surviving World Cup Final ref (4)
7. Fell to his knees at the end of a FA Cup Final (10)
8. 270 degrees (4)
9. Refereed at a high level in both England and Scotland (7)
10. Upton's lists many with this surname but the Stonehouse whistler is probably the best remembered (5)
11. I may spend some of my isolation trimming my --------- (6)
12. A market town in the centre of Gloucestershire (6)
13. The train calling at York,-------------, Durham and Newcastle (10)
14. ------- Bates, a fictional character in Psycho (6)
15. Daarset's finest (7)
16. 'Smiler' (5)
17. Seen basking on the rocks in his native Cumbria? (4)
18. A Steel City heavyweight (4)
19. Harrow's finest? (7)
20. A newbie card shark unloved in East Anglia? (5)
21. Concluded his career with Liverpool v Charlton in May 2007 (9)

Nice one AT - even my feeble wits could cope with that.

If I am correct, out of the 22 "first" names, only 4 appear twice, which seems a lower number than might have been expected. Relatively few of them would feature on the current list.

In fact I underestimated: 8 of the 22 names feature in the current list (2 inevitably so, as being in both!) Of the remaining 6 names, one is in a class of his own (TTFL would doubtless say a world of his own) 3 appear twice and 2 appear three times.

Well spotted John, I originally thought I had counted up 20 questions but then found that I had 21, so it is little wonder that I counted up the letters in the Lincoln family question wrong. I have now amended  ;D

Thanks again AT for an entertaining interlude. Your clues certainly cover an impressively extensive range, Postman Pat being long after my time.

As one who never watches films, I had to rely on Google for numbers 18 and 24 (though had you gone for the writer of the latter...), for proof that I wasn't making number 28 up and for confirmation of a guess at number 29.

It did provide me with one of those uplifting moments when something you have been trying to remember without success suddenly flits into your mind from nowhere, in the form of number 17, who was Dixon's son-in-law, I think. That moment sets me up for the rest of the day now!

I hope lots of members (especially any called Joe!) will follow the advice of number 19's title song.

How odd! smiley face should indeed read 8 letters (17, 18, 26). Not sure how that has come about and checked my draft which shows (8) in each case. However 24 is definitely 7 letters as shown. Edit - there it's happened again, I meant eight not smiley face. bmb help please!

As JCFC has done, I would love to see discussion on some of the questions, your favourite programmes or films, your memories and so on. Just not the answers, thank you.  ;D (and that is a smiley face!)

However 24 is definitely 7 letters as shown.

That's odd: Google gave me an eight letter answer for that one too. The writer/character would indeed be seven.

Re: Isolation Referee quiz
Today of course is match day – or should have been – and I should have been heading south to see Palace v Burnley in the PL. Instead I have a quiz for you of referees for some of the more memorable games involving the Palace over the years. They are in no particular order. See how many of the referees you can name from the clues given. As always, number of letters in the name are shown in brackets. Please don’t post answers on this thread but by all means discuss if you like or send me the answers by private message. Thank you and keep safe.

1.   Palace 2 v Burnley 0 1979, this ref went on to ref the Palace in a FA Cup Final (4)
2.   Palace 3 v Nottingham Forest 1 1965, this Lancs ref went on to referee World Cup games and an FA Cup Final (7)
3.   Palace 0 v Leeds 3 1965, from FA Amateur Cup Final line to FA Cup Final ref in 3 years (6)
4.   Palace 1 Nottingham Forest 1 1971, Oops there appears to be a hole in the net, this Hartlepool ref left the list shortly after (6)
5.   Palace 0 Fulham 1 1978, Oops, a dicky watch moment, the players had to return to the pitch after the ref only played 40 minutes in the 2nd half (6)
6.   Palace 2 v Man Utd 2 1969, a new experience for the Palace if not the ref (3)
7.   Palace 5 Man Utd 0 1972, refereed the FACF in his final game many years later (7)
8.   Palace 5 Sheffield United 1 1971, did this diminutive ref support the Alex? (5)
9.   Wrexham 2 Palace 4 1977, a League Cup Final for this ex semi-pro footballer (6)
10.   Sunderland 0 Palace 1 1976, known as ‘The Book’ (6)
11.   Palace 4 Millwall 2 1969, ‘few ran as fast as the referee’ (11)
12.   Palace 3 Man Utd 5 1971, and this ref was known for his spectacular sprints (6)
13.   Palace 2 Mansfield 2 1962, booked 10 players at the final whistle, he had already refereed a FACF and refereed his last game in a title winning game at Spurs (6)
14.   Palace 4 Liverpool 3 1990, a head teacher and top ref for many years (8 )
15.   Palace 2 Burnley 0 2018, now retired, this popular ref was the last to referee these two teams at Selhurst Park (7)
16.   Burnley 0 Palace 2 2019, a newbie PL ref, he was the last to referee these two teams (6)

And who will be the next I wonder, and when?
