Missing referee's fornames - circa 1991
« on: Mon 11 Oct 2021 20:22 »
I am look for some help with forenames for the following referees / officials who were listed in the match programmes as being fourth / standby officials for European Cup and Cup Winners’ Cup matches:

1991 - M.B. or M.D. Dearing (probably based in the South East of England)
He is listed in the programme with initials M.B.
However, the following two links have the Initials M.D. (assuming it is the same person):
http://www.albiontillwedie.co.uk/seasonarchive/results/1988-89/youths/away/arsenalfayc.html
http://thechels.info/wiki/Hampton_1-2_Chelsea_(1989-90_Middlesex_Charity_Cup)
The forename possibly could possibly be Michael if the following link is the same person:
https://www.worldfootball.net/referee_summary/michael-dearing/

1991 - A. Schneider (London)
Nothing else found

1991 – C. J. Proud (London)
Probably based in Finchley in 1985
https://www.wfchistory.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/08/19850501_Wealdstone_v_Fricklry_Ath_Match_Programme.pdf

1991 – J.E. Abbott (London)
Nothing else found

Tony Schneider and John Abbott.

Tony Schneider was based in North London and John Abbott in Northolt, Middlesex (or thereabouts).

All four were Isthmian League referees and this coincides with the period whereby the responsibility for appointing fourth officials rested with the Appointments Secretaries of the (then) Contributory Leagues.  Each League was allocated a quota of Football League teams and this was one of the Isthmian League's quota.

John Abbott was a FL linesman and, for a good few years, Honorary Secretary of the Association of Isthmian Football League Referees and Linesmen (AIFLRL). A very affable guy and well-liked by his contemporaries.

The Chairman of AIFLRL at this time was Tony Williams, a FL linesman from High Wycombe.

100% correct - both were extremely likeable well thought of chaps.  AIFLRL Meetings took place at Sea Containers House in London (Blackfrairs) which is where Tony worked at the time.  I succeeded John Abbott as Honorary Secretary and my very good mate, Jeff Pettitt succeeded Tony as Chairman.

I think that executive committee meetings of AIFLRL were held at Sea Containers House, rather than the far larger members' meetings. I recall that the latter rotated around the clubs. I distinctly remember attending meetings at Harrow Borough FC and at Finchley FC. The latter was pre-merger with Wingate FC and in a clubhouse that was in need of refurbishment.

Incidentally, Sea Containers House is now an upmarket hotel and restaurant, having been empty for some time :-

You could be right, but some of the members meetings were also held in the staff canteen in the basement of Sea Containers House - perhaps later in the 90's?  The central London location was favoured by me as it was only a few minutes from the train station to get home!

I was on the Isthmian League in the 1970s when Eddie Bray from the Hornchurch area was Referees Secretary. I recall attending 1-2 meetings but no more and I cannot recall where they were held, presumably somewhere in the London area. Refs and lines on the IL had a green badge which I think I've still got somewhere!

So we did not overlap, my "term" was from the mid-80s until 2005.  I, too, still have the green Isthmian League badge somewhere and "served" under Ray Parker, Barry Simmons and Dave Cook as Referees' Secretary.

This was an era when the south-east had much better representation on the National List - many from the Isthmian stable.  Graham Barber, Paul Taylor, Graham Poll, Andy D'Urso, Rob Styles, David Crick, Joe Ross, Gary Willard and Steve Bennett to name just a few

A pedant would say that the green badge was not an IL badge ; it was the badge of the AIFLR&L. I went a bit over the top and bought the association's badge, tie and sweater !

Ray Parker was the Appointments' Secretary in the mid-1980s ; his assistant, who dealt with the line appointments, was Trevor Powell.

Ray was succeeded by Barry Simmons ; Trevor was succeeded by Clive Moyse from Milton Keynes.

John Martin and Dennis Hedges before them, I always enjoyed being out with them on the IL.
