Yes, Philip Don was aware that it would be his final domestic match.  As a head teacher it would have been difficult to continue to justify having a few days away from school for a few days here and there for each appointment in Europe.  He also would have had a month away at the 1994 World Cup in the USA.

Talking (LF) of unscheduled departures, I was reminded of Tony Cox leaving the list after being pelted with coins at the end of a particularly troublesome game at Carrow Road. The game ended 0-0 and was (I recall) played midweek, and the only game that fits the profile in the latter stages of the 1979/80 season (Tony's last season on the list) was Norwich v Middlesbrough which was played on Wednesday 27th February 1980. I guess therefore that this was Tony's final game as a FL referee.

Another final match:

Gwyn Owen - Wolves v West Ham, 15.5.1982.

I'm not sure if Mr. Owen is still with us but if he is his 85th birthday would have been recently (17 April). It's a sobering thought that all those referees who retired in the 1980s would now be in their late seventies and eighties while many who retired in the 1970s would now be in their nineties. I wonder if any referees who reached retirement age in the 1960s are still around? I suspect there may be one or two and that at least one former FL referee has reached his century.

Not only is George Courtney around, he is still refereeing! A wonderful man who I have had the pleasure of meeting several times.

Tony Cox's final game was Portsmouth v Port Vale on 21.12.1979. His previous match was at Carrow Road for a game against Villa which featured a penalty for Norwich and a sending-off for each team so that might be the game you're remembering. A few weeks later (12.1.1980, Hereford v Walsall) came the final game for another referee - Frank Phipps - who had joined the list just a few months earlier but the circumstances of his departure, scheduled or otherwise, I don't know.

Additions to the 'final games' database, taken from the EFL website of refs for 2019/20:

L Collins, Swindon v Crewe, April 2019 (8 yellows)
M Heywood, Bury v Carlisle, Sept 2018 (6 yellows 1 red)

Source - Soccerbase.

I will leave Graham Horwood on the database unless / until he resumes refereeing on the Football League.

Great research folks, well done. My contribution is unhelpfully vague but I have a distinct memory of reading a report of what was said to be the last match refereed by Harold Horner of Coventry when there was some kind of crowd trouble. But I can't remember where it was. Per Upton's this would have been in 1963/4. I've hunted all round the British Newspaper and Times archives to no avail. Does that jog anyone's memory?

A Daily Mirror report mentioned crowd trouble at a Forest-Burnley game on 18 April 1964 (which Burnley won 3-1) culminating in some fans trying to attack referee Horner and his linesmen at the end. I'm not sure if that were his final match (the season ended the following weekend) but it wouldn't be surprising if he decided to call it a day after such an experience.

Thanks Hendo, I'll add Trelford to the database and I have commented separately under ISOR.

Thanks LF - some interesting information about the end of a referee who I never came across. I'll add Harry Horner to the database and if anybody can confirm that he refereed after the Forest v Burnley game (? unlikely), I'll be happy to amend.

Mike Peck - Huddersfield v Blackpool (April 1994).

This was both Huddersfield's last ever league game at Leeds Road and Mike's final match before taking up his role with the FA which sadly didn't last long due to his conviction for theft and subsequent dismissal.

The above images are of the match, including fans getting commemorative pieces of the pitch and Mike blowing the final whistle in the 5th picture

Thanks LF, I'm sure that's the incident I remember. We took the Daily Sketch not the Mirror in our house, so that would have been where I read it and I'm pretty sure the report said it was HH's last game-not that this is a guarantee of truth of course but it's quite likely.

Thinking back to the old RTR, I read somewhere that Iorwerth Jones (of MOTD fame) refereed his final game at Exeter. Records show that Exeter played Cambridge on 26th April 1975. Can anyone confirm that this was his final game. Exeter's previous home game was v Newport, but I very much doubt that Iorwerth would have refereed a game involving a S Wales team.

Exeter-Cambridge was Iory Jones's final game. Another final game a couple of years earlier was Tottenham v Wolves for John Thacker (30.4.1973).
