Thanks LF, I have amended the database. Interesting that both games involved my beloved Crystal Palace. I recall the Blackburn game, mainly from the point of view of the margin of victory, bearing in mind that it was 9th v 5th in Div 2. However I don't think I was there and was probably plying my trade on a contributory league that afternoon. I am sure John Gow would have preferred to have bowed out the following weekend at Wembley, but that honour went, perhaps surprisingly, to Derek Nippard. Harold Davey must also count himself unlucky to have bowed out with a fairly meaningless Div 3 game at Chester and one which was played three days after the Cup Final. Right up until a couple of weeks before, the Palace were in the running for promotion, but 0-0 home draws v Aldershot and Chesterfield (I was present at that one, ref Ken Burns) did it for them and the Chester game became a bit of a dead rubber. Bearing in mind that this was the season that Palace went all the way from the 1st round of the FA Cup to the semi-final, I wonder whether the Chester game was a re-arranged fixture, as playing midweek after the Cup Final was unusual. If this was the case, perhaps Harold had been appointed to the original game and was re-appointed when the fixture was rearranged (a bit like David Hutchinson with the title decider in 1988/9)?

When will I be in a position to amend the database again with this season's departures and when will the list for next season be published I wonder, bearing in mind that some refs are still very much active for a few weeks yet?

One thing I meant to add for the 1978 match was that David Hutchinson was one of the linesmen so it was probably his last match on the line before being promoted to the full List of referees. We tend to think of retiring referees being given top Division or other very notable games as their swansong but that wasn't so common in that era and so it isn't unusual to see them finish with matches in Divisions 2, 3 and 4. In a few cases this was because it was a fixture rearranged after the season's end and the norm was that a referee would handle the rearranged fixture unless he was unavailable. This could also affect top referees so Eric Jennings's last League match was Oldham v Crewe in Division 4 although he did have the Cup Final replay to follow. George Courtney's last League match was a Division 3 game between Stockport and Birmingham but he did a Play-off Final after that.

Graham Horwood and Eddie Ilderton were already on my database of Final Games. Two new additions:

Nicholas Kinseley - Portsmouth v Rochdale, February 2020
Paul Marsden - Leyton Orient v Cambridge, March 2020     (source Soccerbase)

Early in the season for final games for obvious reasons. I suspect that neither Nicholas nor Paul realised for a moment that these games would be their last on the list, even if they were thinking of jacking it in at the end of the season.

I will amend my Final Game database.

Admin - any chance of pinning this thread please?  I'd be grateful if it could.

D Axcell – Millwall v Bristol Rovers, May 1993

So this was a "double last" as it was Millwall's final game at the old Den.  David was joined by Colin Henderson and John Smythe on the lines for his final game (plus me on the Boards).

The game was interrupted by a couple of "good natured" pitch invasions and ended a few minutes early after another.  I distinctly remember Millwall 'keeper Casey Keller trying to reach the safety of the players' tunnel and finally doing so wearing nothing more than a jock-strap - the rest of his kit falling victim to souvenir hunters!  I still used the dressing room towel from that game in my gym kit until about two years ago when Mrs Leggy insisted it would disintegrate if it went through the washing machine again and it was finally retired.

Quite a send off for Millwall and David, as shown on YouTube. The familiar neatly-coiffured white hair of David Axcell, a super penalty save from the Bristol Rovers goalie, and some riotous activities following the final whistle, including bits of the pitch being taken away in plastic bags and goalposts / nets to follow. I went to the Old Den a few times and I still see the site of the ground (now housing) quite regularly when I am returning to London Bridge from Selhurst Park. Thanks for this post Leggy.

It was a very long time ago, and I can quote neither the date nor the opponents, but I have a clear memory that Charles Nicholls' last game was at Brighton c.1970.  His impending retirement was mentioned several times over the PA system before kick-off, and Mr. Nicholls seemed not to wish to sully his final match with too many disciplinary activities; unfortunately the now forgotten opponents ultimately made this impossible to maintain for 90 minutes, and several names were taken before the final whistle.

Someone can probably fill in the gaps in my memory (or indicate that I have lost the plot totally)?

Charlie Nicholls born in Sept 1925 retired after the 1972-73 season

If it was at Brighton it was v Nottingham Forest 28th April 1973

But I cannot find a report of the match

On the old site, we have :-

"This is not correct. If you look back on the I Spy Old Refs thread, you will see that Don Shaw was due to referee the game but had to pull out due to tweaking a muscle a few days previously at OT. When I wrote to Don on another matter, he very kindly wrote back and confirmed the above in his letter. He had previously confirmed his absence in an article in the local press (Crewe/Sandbach) on the 25th anniversary in 2010. He was not sure who refereed the tragic game at Bradford but agreed with our suggestion that it could have been Mr N Glover from Chorley. In Upton, Don is shown as continuing on the FL for 3 more years until 1988 whilst Mr Glover is shown as coming off the list in 1986, although it is possible that he did not referee during the 1985/6 season. I have to say that the anniversary of the tragedy had passed my mind as well, and I am sorry that there was not some sort of commemoration over this past weekend. RIP"

The story as I understand it is that Norman Glover did the middle at Valley Parade, and then stayed on the list for one further season. However, he was effectively traumatised by Valley Parade, and suffered flashbacks. The 1985/86 season was about his tenth on the middle of the FL, but he had a difficult time. I was subsequently at a meeting were Norman described writing his letter of resignation from the League list on the evening of Friday 2 May 1986 and then posting it on the way to his game on Saturday 3 May 1986, which was the last day of the season and his final game too. What I do not know is whether Norman anticipated being removed from the list and hence jumped before he was pushed.

What I cannot remember is what game Norman did on Saturday 3 May 1986. If we have a list of fixtures for that day, it should be ascertainable from local newspapers. What I can recall, some thirty-plus years later, is that it was a nondescript lower division game in the North of England. And there was no fanfare either, as only Norman knew that it was to be his last game.

The photograph attached is from https://imsvintagephotos.com/norman-glover-1028913, and shows a relatively young Norman Glover in action.

The game between Everton and Southampton is mentioned in the list above - it was the final game of Peter Willis.

The game between Wrexham and Stockport County is mentioned in the list above - it was the final game of J Ball.

The Times of Monday 5 May 1986 (accessed via The Times Digital Archive 1785-2014) names just one referee from the previous Saturday's games - the West Bromwich Albion v West Ham United game was taken by Alan Robinson of Hampshire.

A programme found on eBay suggests that Mr K A Lupton was in the middle for the Blackpool versus Newport County game.

A programme found on eBay suggests that Mr M L James of Horsham was in the middle for the Bristol City versus Reading game.

A programme found on eBay suggests that Mr D B Allison of Lancaster was in the middle for the Sheffield Wednesday versus Ipswich Town game.

A programme found on a supporters' blog suggests that Allan Gunn of Sussex was in the middle for the Watford versus Manchester United game.

Norman Glover's final game was on Tuesday 6th May 1986 - Halifax 1 Mansfield 2 in Division 4. On Saturday 3rd May he refereed Hull v Brighton in Division 2 - Hull won 2-0. The match at Halifax was rearranged after being postponed on 28th December and in those days a referee would usually do the rearranged game - if it came after the end of the normal season this would then be their final game although the original appointment had been made many months earlier.

The game that probably fits the bill is Brighton v Portsmouth on Easter Monday 23rd April 1973 (a very late Easter!) Charles Nicholls definitely refereed that match which ended 1-1.

Thanks LF and others for your contributions and suggestions. I am away at the moment enjoying some of the last days of sunshine (perhaps) in this troubled year, and I will look in more detail at this thread on my return home.
