You have 1993 as his last match which was probably his last as "of Kettering" but he then did a couple more seasons as "of Market Harborough" and ended his career with the 3-3 draw between Everton and Chelsea at Goodison Park on 3rd May 1995.

The Channel Islands end of season matches - Upton Park (clubs) and Muratti Vase (islands) have been F.A. appointments since at least the 1920's.

Even the Muratti semi-final had a "mainland" referee until 1958.

Those appointed often went on to bigger and better things but on other occasions these have been "farewell" matches,
even if only a few days after their final league or cup match listed in the earlier posts.

Candidates for these are all Muratti's unless stated

06.05.48 Barrick
22.04.78 Nippard (Upton) (but with F.A. Cup Final two weeks later)
09.05.78 Bent
04.05.81 Partridge
27.04.85 Bune (Upton) (but with Freight Rover Cup Final five weeks later)
06.05.85 Burden
13.05.95 B.Hill (Upton)
18.05.03 Wilkes (replay)
06.05.07 Olivier
08.05.10 J.Singh
08.05.11 Crossley
16.05.15 D'Urso
14.05.16 Graham

Well spotted John and of course you are right. I have amended the database accordingly and thank you for pointing this out

Gilbert Pullin in an interview in Aberdeen Evening Express 20.11.1971 states that his last match was Tottenham 2, Blackpool 0 at White Hart Lane played in a blizzard. That must have been 19.01.1963 one of the few matches played in the "big freeze". It therefore appears he did not resume for the remainder of his final season.

I will leave Graham Horwood on the database unless / until he resumes refereeing on the Football League.

He's a assessor/observer now so I doubt he will be back on the pitch.

Many thanks for this info, John, I'll add Gilbert to the database. We had some contact with Gilbert's family on the old RTR and I wish we could transfer it across, he sounded like a nice man. It is certainly correct that he finished a bit early in his final season, so Jan 1963 is probably right.

He also mentions in the same interview that he sat with Gina Lollobrigida on his flight to Jersey for the 1960 Muratti and that he thinks he did not get the F.A. Cup Final as he gave the wrong response to a freemasons handshake from an F.A. Official

Thanks for those recollections re Gilbert Pullin. I'm not sure that he was ever that close to refereeing an FA Cup Final and the profile of games I've seen for him is fairly mainstream. Of course it's always possible that a potentially high-flying career might come a cropper early on due to someone antagonising influential people so an apparent journeyman might actually have deserved better things. it's also possible for for a fairly unremarkable individual to be pushed forward because they are in the favour of those with influence. It's also true though that sometimes individuals use these sorts of claims of unfair influence or favour without good reason - "the face fits" and "not what you know but who you know" are maxims which are often justified but also sometimes used as excuses. Certainly though one gets the impression that refereeing progress in the more distant past was often haphazard, capricious and occasionally not based on merit with Final appointments in particular often related to lobbying rather than performance. Whatever the reality there are many fascinating tales that past referees could tell.

Amen to that! There is one referee I know who daily spouts off that he has never made the FIFA list purely because his face didn't fit for various reasons - I've seen him referee several times and to put it politely I was a better referee than him and I was rubbish!! I was a fairly decent lino at county level at but not a particularly good referee, I never went higher because frankly I didn't have the talent to do so. I fully acknowledge it was nothing to do with me being a teenage female in the late 80's at a time when there was very much a 'women should be pregnant and barefoot in the kitchen not on a football pitch' attitude in general but whilst I was good enough in youth football I was decidedly average in adult games, no more, no less. Shame people aren't always so accepting of their own limitations!

" Barefoot in the kitchen"

A bit harsh BMB, to assume that much freedom

Tied to the stove perhaps? 😉

Thanks LF, I have amended the database. Interesting that both games involved my beloved Crystal Palace. I recall the Blackburn game, mainly from the point of view of the margin of victory, bearing in mind that it was 9th v 5th in Div 2. However I don't think I was there and was probably plying my trade on a contributory league that afternoon. I am sure John Gow would have preferred to have bowed out the following weekend at Wembley, but that honour went, perhaps surprisingly, to Derek Nippard. Harold Davey must also count himself unlucky to have bowed out with a fairly meaningless Div 3 game at Chester and one which was played three days after the Cup Final. Right up until a couple of weeks before, the Palace were in the running for promotion, but 0-0 home draws v Aldershot and Chesterfield (I was present at that one, ref Ken Burns) did it for them and the Chester game became a bit of a dead rubber. Bearing in mind that this was the season that Palace went all the way from the 1st round of the FA Cup to the semi-final, I wonder whether the Chester game was a re-arranged fixture, as playing midweek after the Cup Final was unusual. If this was the case, perhaps Harold had been appointed to the original game and was re-appointed when the fixture was rearranged (a bit like David Hutchinson with the title decider in 1988/9)?

When will I be in a position to amend the database again with this season's departures and when will the list for next season be published I wonder, bearing in mind that some refs are still very much active for a few weeks yet?

Have you got Phil Dowd as a full game or a half game!
