English International Referees First Names?
« on: Wed 12 May 2021 07:58 »
Any ideas on the first names of these Englishmen, possibly in the services, who refereed these overseas internationals?

Sgt. W. Mortimer, originally London but based at Aldershot - France v Belgium 1914
Lt. A.E. Edwards, Royal Field Artillery, of Charlton, Kent - France v Belgium 1922
J.M. Scott - Egypt v Norway 1948
H.A. Sheppard - Hong Kong v Israel 1956
Mr. Gordon - Qatar v Greece 1986

meh i thought HA was Harold Arthur, just couldnt verify it.

I did find however that W.Mortimer, served in the 1st Grenadier Guards. he refereed a fair few matches in the early 1910's in local and district leagues around aldershot and london. Appears he was from London originally, but still cant find anything on his forename.

This gives the first name of Mr Gordon as Barry, although I can't vouch for its accuracy!
