Edwin Bainbridge (Croydon)

Edwin, not Edward, as given on other sites

3rd August 1898 - Q3 1969

The son of John William (1873-1948) and Martha Duke (1874-1920). His birth in Newington was registered as James Edwin Bainbridge
in the Greenwich Registration District but all his other records have him as Edwin James

Married Margaret Emily Pavey (not Payer) (born 13th April 1898) at East Dulwich (Camberwell Reg Dist) 27th February 1921
One child James H. born 9th March 1934. Margaret died Q4 1989 (Croydon Reg Dist)

Edwin died 20 years before her, Q3 1969 Croydon Reg Dist

Edwin first appears as a Class 3 referee with London F.A. in 1926-27
when living at 25 Crystal Palace Road, East Dulwich S.E. 22

He is still there when listed as Class 2 with Surrey F.A. in 1928-29

In 1931-32 (and 1932-33) he is listed by both London & Surrey as Class 2 but has now moved to
9 Homer Road, Monks Orchard, Shirley, Croydon

1933-34 Surrey add him to their list of those that can take F.A. Cup ties (qualifying rounds)
as he is presumably now Class 1 and this confirmed by the 1934-35 lists of both London & Surrey

The September 1939 Register (census) sees that he has already joined the Army,
with his wife Margaret and five year old son James still at 9 Homer Road, but without him present

Many English newspapers of Thursday 11th January 1940 carried the news that the French F.A. had had
their request to the F.A. (London) granted to allow Bainbridge, a Class 1 referee with London & Surrey,
and a soldier serving in France, to  referee their forthcoming international v Portugal at Parc des Princes
in Paris on Sunday 28th January 1940.

In front of 18,083 France won 3-2. They were three up before Portugal pulled two back in the last seven minutes.

Quite a step up from his usual matches in the Thornton and District Football League
and the occasional early round F.A. Amateur Cup tie.

My old 'neck of the woods' and interesting to see that Edwin was secretary of the Croydon RA which celebrates its centenary next year. As you say JT, a far cry from refereeing Coulsdon Highways Res v Croydon Adults to France v Portugal!
