Don't Shoot the Ref - short documentary from 1981
« on: Tue 16 Jun 2020 18:23 »
In case anyone hasn't seen it there is a short documentary from 1981 called "Don't Shoot the Ref":

It focuses on two referees called Neil - the up-and-coming Neil Midgley (then of Eccles) and London parks referee Neil Farrell and provides an excellent comparison between the two at very different levels of the game. Most of the focus is on Neil Midgley and it shows him receiving his appointment card for a Middlesbrough-Sunderland game (November 1981), preparing for the match (including washing his laces!), talking about refereeing and then clips of him during the game with the video topped and tailed by fans of both clubs complaining about referees. A great insight into him in his pre-international and Cup Final days and one wonders what happened to the less famous Neil from the parks?
