CWJ Gardner

While doing a little Upton research to discover the identity of the recent photo ( probably Darryl Reeves ) i came across a name from the 1970s which I don't think I have ever clocked before and I don't remember being mentioned on here. CWJ Gardner of Gloucester. He was on the Supplementary List from 1975 to 1977 and then on the Full List for the season 1977 to 1978. After that nothing. A short tenure, does anyone remember him at all?

One of the delights of looking through Upton is discovering hitherto quite unknown referees plying their trade during a time of one's own active involvement with refereeing.

I saw him once at Northampton and recall a quite burly gent who was maybe a bit follically challenged as well. He was on the Southern League refs list for a while before 77.

Despite appearances Colin Gardner was still a supplementary referee in 1977-1978 and didn't ultimately reach the Full List. For that final season of supplementaries they were included with those on the full list but only refereed in Divisions 3 and 4 and still acted as linesmen. The same was true for the other referees new to the List for 1977-1978 such as Brian Hill, John Martin and George Tyson. Colin Gardner did therefore have the unique distinction of having three consecutive seasons as a supplementary referee after which he stepped down as a linesman as well.

I have just come across a picture of Colin Gardner in his refereeing days in a match between Reading and Southport in September 1977 - he certainly fits your recollection.
