Big Match Rewind
« on: Sun 14 Jun 2020 08:53 »
I was watching the Big Match rewind on ITV4 yesterday which featured three games from 11th December 1976.

An impressive performance from the Exeter prison officer Ron Crabb in the main game, Chelsea v Wolves, in Div 2 (how times have changed!). I was fascinated by one of the linesmen whose whole face seemed to be obscured by long hair and a full beard. A real Rasputin. Smallish. No idea who he was, does he ring any bells with anyone? Left wings first half, straight across to right wings in the 2nd.

No names given for the Liverpool v QPR game but the very good Liverpool stats site gives it as Derek Civil which I think is correct.

No idea on the referee for the Leeds v Aston Villa game but a good sighting of the guy helping to clear the toilet rolls from the pitch. On YouTube, Leeds v Aston Villa, 11th December 1976 at about 0:30. Any ideas?

Ron Crabb, Derek Civil & George Nolan (Stockport)

Chelsea & Wolves drew again at Molineux in the penultimate game of the season and went up as the top two

Nottingham Forest crept in to the third promotion place by a point from Bolton & Blackpool - I wonder if they managed to survive at the higher level ? !!!

Thanks John. I remember the name George Nolan but don't think I ever saw him in action. It is good to see what he looked like.

The distinctive-looking, bearded linesman at Chelsea (assuming no change to the appointed officials) was W.A. Whittington of Bexhill-on-Sea.
