I thought the viewers of this forum might appreciate this referee's anecdote, which I chanced upon while reading through some old archive newspaper reports

It was published in the Burnley News (Wednesday 26th March 1913)

A variant on this theme was Don Bradman (not intending a joke) saying that the umpire in the test match was a good batsman until his eyesight went!
