Disgraceful. Vile.

I see the club have let the player go with immediate effect & apologised to the referee.

Most importantly I hope he is ok.
Hajrá Lilák. Csak a Kispest. Hajrá Magyarok! Hajrá játékvezetői csapat! Soha ne add fel. Nincs sárga kérem!!! No Chris Kavanagh doesn't live in Ashton or even in the Greater Manchester area!!

"Referee assault" looks to be slightly misleading

It looks like Alex Penfold (Epsom 12 and one of their management team) shoves a Dorking player who then cannons in to the referee

Nevertheless that and what follows is not "pretty"

Awful scenes

From a training POV, should the referee have moved the player into a neutral zone and given himself space where he could back off if needed, as it looks he was quite close to the advertising boards.

I know what you mean, however, he is  refereeing a football match and he should be safe from attack from anyone. Whatever the intent of the player concerned, whether it was directed at the referee or another player, there is no place for this in the game, not now or ever in the past!

The resultant disciplinary action should reflect this, however, from past experience I somehow know that this will not be the case!
Referee's decision used to be final!

It would be very difficult to claim that there wasn't aggressive intent toward the Referee.
The involvement of the Dorking player seems totally incidental if indeed your interpretation of the incident is correct
