Andre Marriner, Arsenal v Liverpool
« on: Sat 03 Nov 2018 20:01 »
An incident of considerable controversy in the 1st half of this evening's game when Liverpool had a goal ruled out for offside. Mane put the ball in the net after it came back off the post, but Simon Long flagged it offside because Mane had previously been in an offside position. Peter Walton commented on BT that the decision was wrong since Mane was not affecting any Arsenal players by being in an offside position. Very marginal but I think Peter was right. One for the MOTD brigade later this evening I imagine. Peter also commented on two incidents when the Arsenal and Liverpool goalies appeared to foul opposition forwards when going for the ball. He suggested that neither was a penalty and I tend to agree on both counts.

Overall a reasonable performance from Andre and team, perhaps barring the incident outlined above.

Even longer than that!! He was grey when he ushered the 2 sets of players back into their respective dressing rooms at an AFCB match as I was being treated in the corridor outside of them 17 years ago & they thought I was in labour with bmb jr! He stayed in the corridor mind & wished me luck as I was being wheeled past cussing that I didn't want to miss the 2nd half! It was a false alarm as well! Scarily he remembered me a few weeks later at Dean Court & dashed over to have a cuddle with bmb jr!!

I don't think he flagged for the first ball forward, rather he has flagged for the shot by Firmino that came back off the post.  He shouldn't have because Mane was clearly behind the ball, but if you look at the image below the assistant is nowhere near being in a position to be able to see that.  The second image clearly shows that he hadn't flagged for the first ball and rather is penalising Mane for offside at the time Firmino shoots.

What about the two goalkeeping incidents? I am of the view that a similar challenge between two outfield players anywhere on the field of play would result in a DFK, why are goalkeepers treated any different?

I have to disagree with you rustyref. I think the AR saw Mane in an offside position when the ball was played into the penalty area but then correctly waited to see whether anything came of the offside, hence the fact that he is clearly behind play when Mane eventually played the ball. The mistake he then made was to flag Mane offside when he put the ball in the net since (as Peter Walton commented) Mane was not then in an offside position and had in no way interfered with any of the Arsenal players, for example their line of vision.

Peter also commented on the penalty incidents and suggested that goalies get more protection in the penalty area than other players. For what it is worth, I don't think the first incident was anything more than an attempt to get at the ball, whilst the second incident, although more robust, was imo on the margins of legality and I wouldn't have criticised Andre Marriner for ignoring claims for a penalty.

Not for me.  If that was the case the flag would have gone up much earlier, certainly no later than when Firmino plays the ball.  Rather he waits until the ball is actually in the goal and he wouldn't need to do so, as once Firmino shoots the position of Mane when the first pass was made becomes totally irrelevant.
