What's in a name ?
« on: Tue 28 Feb 2023 11:56 »
Over the past twenty or so years, double barrelled names have become far more common among professional footballers. I imagine this is a reflection of people wishing to honour the family names of both mother and father. Although I have seen dual surnames among referees lower down the pyramid, I am struggling to recall a referee on SG1, SG2, Football League or before that the National List who was so named. There was an AR called Proctor-Green some years ago and Upton records names of generations ago, Ross-Gower and Prince-Cox among them. Interesting quite a few of those double barrelled gentlemen in Upton held military rank.

Perhaps other memories are better than mine in this regard and I wonder if perhaps some of the double barrelled in the pyramid will keep their double names or be known by a single name if they get promoted to the higher echelons ?

Whistleblower....definitely singly and not doubly barrelled !

Carl Fitch-Jackson is the only serving official in the EFL with such a unique arrangement of names.

Obviously if Kettle junior progresses to the level and ability of his father he will be on that list in the future?

There's also a Paul Lister-Flynn.

There are also more double barrelled names now as the numbers of marriages decline
and both parents are effectively named on the birth certificates by the double barrelling

Carl Fitch-Jackson
Paul Lister-Flynn
Tom Reeves-Leck

are current officials
although Tom does not use the latter half
and Paul has only recently added his

The Ross-Gower family were well known in S London / Surrey refereeing circles although only W Ross-Gower (1939-1947) made it to the full referees list.

If this person ( I am presuming male ) is a lawyer and gets elevated to the High Court Bench then he would be Mr Justice Justice Abaka-Jacobs and he would be able to say, I am so good they named me twice !

Yes that’s right, think he is still in the area. Whilst being an assistant referee he was a Maths teacher and would write the GCSE maths exams for AQA.

The Bishop of London in the 1950s, himself double barrelled, was Henry Montgomery Campbell who was known for his deadpan and somewhat mordant wit. Once he was interviewing a young curate in his study at Fulham Palace and said " take a chair Clinton " only for the curate to reply " actually my Lord, it's Fiennes-Clinton "  to which the Bishop responded  " well, take two chairs then ".
