Over the past twenty or so years, double barrelled names have become far more common among professional footballers. I imagine this is a reflection of people wishing to honour the family names of both mother and father. Although I have seen dual surnames among referees lower down the pyramid, I am struggling to recall a referee on SG1, SG2, Football League or before that the National List who was so named. There was an AR called Proctor-Green some years ago and Upton records names of generations ago, Ross-Gower and Prince-Cox among them. Interesting quite a few of those double barrelled gentlemen in Upton held military rank.
Perhaps other memories are better than mine in this regard and I wonder if perhaps some of the double barrelled in the pyramid will keep their double names or be known by a single name if they get promoted to the higher echelons ?
Whistleblower....definitely singly and not doubly barrelled !
