VAR - Too picky again?
« on: Tue 28 Dec 2021 22:03 »
A couple of decisions involving VAR would be good to get your opinion on - do you think these were correct calls or a case of VAR getting it wrong again (and in the case of number 1, should it be getting involved in situations that happen a long time before a goal is scored?)

1) VAR disallowing a West Ham goal where there was a very soft foul in the middle of the pitch approx 1 min or more before they scored

2) VAR disallowing Harry Kane's goal where he looked onside, and in which there was no gap between the red and blue lines and it looked as if they were measuring against Kane's shoulder (I thought they were supposed to stop measuring against the shoulder and also that they should now be using thicker lines and a gap between the red and blue lines for it to be offside?)

1. It was nowhere near a minute before hand. It was a foul in the direct lead up to the goal. Soft yes possibly but it was a foul and can't be described as being a wrong call. Don't think VAR had much of a choice with it to be honest as it falls into what they are required to check on a goal scored.  Shame because it was a cracking finish for the goal.

2. I didn't see it but they will measure from the frontmost part of the player that can legally score a goal, that includes the shoulder.  Handball area starts around the armpit roughly - above that a goal can be scored legally therefore that part can be offside.  Now whether it should be is a whole different discussion and one that falls into what the LOTG say!
Hajrá Lilák. Csak a Kispest. Hajrá Magyarok! Hajrá játékvezetői csapat! Soha ne add fel. Nincs sárga kérem!!! No Chris Kavanagh doesn't live in Ashton or even in the Greater Manchester area!!

Dale Johnson on twitter says Kane offside was as marginal a call as you could get with tolerance level now added but lines didn't touch so correct decision.

Exactly. It’s just total Clown School on MotD.

There have been tolerances added. It’s quite possible, within the tolerances, to be ever-so-slightly offside and have a goal allowed.

If the lines don’t align, then you’re definitely offside, even if visibly looks ‘marginal’.

As on would say give them an inch and they want a yard.
If you keep increasing the tolerance levels, soon attackers will have to have daylight between them and a defender.

Which worked wonderfully well and was much easier to adjudicate as an AR

Do you happen to know what the tolerances are and how they have been estimated?

I dont disagree with you rcg, in fact i liked it too, but wherever you draw the line there will always be those who arent in agreement as to where it is drawn. You are either off or onside there cant be an in between.
