Second episode now up.

Bits from Oliver and Collum's games although no major controversies.

Did anyone make out what was said for the penalty save with Hategan during Dortmund V Barcelona? Translation sub-titles went too quick for my eyes!

Haven't had time to watch this yet so I can't answer your query, although it did get me thinking why you like VAR so much ------admitting that things are too quick for your eyes obviously means that you need VAR.   Only joking Reading!

ait until you get old, you'll not know what the hell is going on, particualrly if they keep changing the Laws and their interpretation! Some of us oldies are really struggling to know what is and what isn't a  penalty, a foul, handball, cautionable offence, whether the ball matter.

I'm hoping  that there may be more clarification in these documentaries.
Referee's decision used to be final!

Was a bit too much on the outside.

Maybe a step and a half, please check.

Hategan comes across as a really nice guy. Highly intelligent as well.  Wonder if he will go back to being a doctor post retirement? Very difficult listening to him talking about the day his Mum died. I've said before what immense courage he showed that day to carry on with that game. His Mum would have been so proud of him, even more than usual.

Enjoyed listening to Rocchi

Had to giggle at the first words we hear from Michael Oliver were "it's absolutely freezing" - Man up, you're supposed to be a hardy northerner!!

Episode 3  https://www.uefa.tv/video/vod/179770/

Anthony Taylor features. He's in competition with Pawson as to who can do the sugar plum fairy look more often though! He comes across very well. I know his community work during Lockdown 1 was mentioned on here before but just in case he pops his head in - thank you Anthony. Same to anyone who helped voluntarily in the ways he he did, or in whatever way really, as someone who is disabled & shielded I know how 1st hand how much that help was needed and appreciated.

Turpin does not suit a beard! Was good listening to him speak with the match observer post match in the dressing room after the red card incident.  How cute he knew how many days successively he'd sat and eaten with his wife & kids & the simple joy he showed of reading to his kids at bedtime, a reminder of the sacrifices these guys make over the years.

Carlos Del 'totty' Grande (can never remember his full name) was coming across very well - ruined it by wearing yellow though!

Didn't know Makkelie is a police officer.

Rosetti - "The referees are not only people who take decisions on the field of play but behind the referees we also want men. Also great men. So I'm very happy, I am very proud. I am very proud of those who are taking care of other people. It is something also fantastic for their image."  Sounds like he places a lot of emphasis on character

The sports science was interesting as was seeing how they handled the training when covid 1st hit.

Enjoyable episode. Turpin I think comes across as a really decent affable guy. I still wish they would feature far more in game communications, for some games they are closer to brief highlights with little or no focus on the referees. Overall though its a good series imo, just feel they could have given a little more insight into on the pitch matters. Good to hear referees speaking about incidents afterwards though.

I am doubtless particularly out of touch or just obtuse, but not having seen the documentary, nor even The Nutcracker, I confess to being mystified by that image. It is hard to believe that the referees don tutus as a way of letting their hair down - the latter part of which idea would prove particularly difficult for Mr Taylor. There must surely be some other explanation.

I think it could have been condensed down into fewer episodes. Nothing too much seemed to happen in the last one. We had Taylor speaking at the start then it cut to another match with another referee. We then had Taylor speaking about the challenges of preparing to referee a game behind closed doors. The highlights were just of the goals (don't think there was any focus on the red card?) and there was no reflection from Taylor after on what it had actually been like.

Or just ordered a bit better. It does seem to jump about a lot and certain referees get featured way more than others, quite disproportionately.  Turpin for example has had quite a lot of focus in all 3 episodes, Makkelie has had 2 mins across all 3. I've enjoyed the focus on Turpin and it would have been nice to see the others get as much air time as he has had. The red card was partially covered with his discussion with the observer but then it would have been interesting to either hear the observers view on his explanation, if it was acceptable, if it would have affected his mark etc. or even a follow up from Mr Rosetti. Good point re Taylor, there was a lot of emphasis on the difference in preparation for the first fan free game but as you say no reflection on what it had been like.

Thoroughly enjoyed it though & hopefully UEFA will continue to produce more documentaries like it. I think they are not just good for those of us in refereeing but also for the wider football fans. They can learn quite a bit and maybe some anti-attitudes will be changed along the way.

I have to say I have been disappointed with it.  What could have been (and in future could be) a fascinating insight has come across to me as a very bland corporate promotional video when it could have been something like the Amazon documentary following the Australian cricket team for a year.  Just showing things that went well gives the impression of UEFA burying their heads in the sand.  We know mistakes get made; show how it affects the referee, what they do to prevent it happening again, etc.

It's their first effort with it. Maybe if it has been well received they will go on and make further ones and will learn and grow in terms of the content. I agree with the point in the need to show some of the bad along with the good but perhaps they figure that as every other media outlet concentrates solely on the negatives that they would concentrate on the positives.  I think it would do a lot of good for fans to see how they deal with a big error, they might realise that it's not just a bit of fun for the ref and they do care about getting it right.

I'd like to see them do one at the Euros maybe. Show the pre-tournament training, preparation and selection process and then follow the referees during the tournament.

I agree one of the Euros would be good.

Turpin was involved in a few different VAR decisions which is perhaps why he's appeared quite a bit. In general, VAR seems to have been quite well handled in the CL - probably helped by most of the officials being the very best around - so there perhaps isn't always too much to focus on. (I know handball gets a lot of focus but that's more a difference in our interpretation I think.)

I'd like to see more of the travel beforehand, pre-match meetings and instructions, more detail in the interactions between referee and VAR, and post match debriefing and analysis by UEFA committee after. You could probably spend 20 minutes on one match easily instead of 2 minutes of the referee saying how much he likes the job and having a highlights package of the goals.

Did anyone watch the last episode?

Enjoyed it overall as a series although I think we all agree that there were improvements that could have been made in terms of content. Good effort all round though for a 1st attempt and would probably appeal to many non referees as well.

The lesson Missy bmb learned tonight - to take more notice of the AR's she normally doesn't watch!!!!
