I am not sure what is more depressing, that this is the case in Ireland as well as the UK or that absolutely no surprise.

The level of punishment is not acting as a deterrent - in some cases it is almost giving a green light to thump a referee.  What will it take for proper action to be taken and proper support given to referees?  Its bad enough seeing pictures of referees with cuts and bruises to the face.  Do we need a referee to be seriously injured, or worse?
