Everton v Crystal Palace - Anthony Taylor

I’ve only just caught brief highlights of this “must win” game for Everton and I’ll be interested to know the thoughts of the esteemed correspondents on here about the tackle by Palace’s Jordan Ayew on Gordon of Everton.

It was a high, late, scissors type tackle that, for me, should have resulted in a dismissal. Anthony Taylor opted for a caution, and then checked with the VAR who didn’t see any reason for an upgrade to a red card.

It certainly incensed what was already a febrile home support, and I have my own views on Taylor as a referee in the Premier League. Here he opted for the safer option of a caution when the tackle that was made ought to be outlawed; it was frankly dangerous that could have resulted in a very nasty injury for the recipient.

As I say, interesting to find out observations from our learned friends on here.

A great game of football ,armed by disgraceful seems from the supporters.

Anthony Taylor  on the other hand was excellent. Let the game flow well but asserted control. The ayew tackle is 50/50 but I prefer yellow as I don’t think it was that dangerous really. Worth nothing that Calvert Lewin did the exact same thing later and didn’t even concede a freekick.

Overall a great performance

Anthony Taylor’s judgement of red card challenges is not as good as some in the PL. and this is one of the top 2 refs in England and top 10 in Europe…

Premier League refereeing standards are at a very low standard atm and it is summed up when one of our supposed elite officials can’t recognise that as SFP, a problem that English officials on the whole have had for a good few years now which is down to rubbish coaching in my opinion and that comes from the top but sadly it doesn’t look like that’ll change any time soon.
I like Anthony Taylor as a referee most of the time and on his day he can be world class however it feels like more often than not we’re talking about an error from him or him having to go to VAR atm as with the missed penalty at West Ham at the wknd and the Ayew tackle tonight, these are things an elite official should be getting right in my personal opinion.
Hopefully he can get this bumpy season out the way and hit the ground running next season especially with him attending the WC later this year.

100% Red Card all day for me. The "scissors tackle" endangers the opponent in my view. Ayew could have broken Gordon's leg. Luckily, he didn't.

I haven't seen the challenged so can't comment on it but I'm afraid Gordon has quickly developed a reputation for making the most of any challenge on him.

Anthony has become a good referee but  mentioned  previously always has one bad decision in his performance, of which there have been a few this season, But to be fair there are other Premier League referees who have not identified  red card offences. Looking at the season  in general i think there  has been some poor performances overall and the standard has deteriorated. Thou i am sure Mike Riley would disagree.

He was really bad at West Ham the other day, probably one of the worst performances I've ever seen from him (to be fair he's usually solid)
