Torquay v Derby - David Rock
« on: Sun 06 Nov 2022 17:08 »
An FA Cup tie that was a slow burner. Poor first half that was littered with fouls and ended with driving rain. But the ending was as dramatic as you’ll see,  with Torquay getting a late equaliser to force a replay.

The referee was kept busy and there were a few talking points. One was a head high challenge on a Torquay player. Dangerous play but the fact it wasn’t deliberate swayed Mr. Rock’s mind and he settled, wisely in my view, for a yellow card. The replay backed him up.

Then in a frenetic second half, a shirt pull by a Derby player in the area resulted in a clear penalty to Torquay. After a long deliberation, David Rock produced a red card. I have to say that there was a covering defender and I’m not convinced it was a DOGSO. But others will have different opinions I’m sure.

Derby then indulged in some rather blatant time wasting and the referee was a little lenient. But these overt tactics rebounded on the League 1 side when the referee played on over the 4 minimum added minutes. Torquay equalised to make it 2-2 and cue pandemonium. Wonderfully exciting end to the game.

I thought David Rock did reasonably well overall, but the red card and the lack of action on the time wasting tarnished his display slightly. As I said before, until independent time keepers are brought into football, this charade will continue at all levels.

Some cracking cup tie action and no VAR!

After the red card, I noticed the time wasting but how can you criticise the referee? Other top referees fail to clamp down on it.

I question the red card absolutely, but not one that I would expect to be overturned. Torquay deserved the replay

I don’t understand how it can be a red card. The player was tackled as he was being pulled. Terrible decision

I thought the red card was harsh but I am very pleased Torquay get their financial bonus by getting a replay at Derby.

It's the first time I have seen  Mr Rock and there is something curiously old fashioned about his style of refereeing and demeanour. Put him in a shirt with white collar and cuffs and white sock tops and it could have been a performance straight out of the 1970s.

When the initial pull was made the attacker was beyond the line of defenders. Without the pull he would have been in on goal. I think Mr Rock received some good advice from the line.

On a par with Mr Hackett?

I am pleased that Mr Rock has obviously progressed from the pig's ear of a performance which he had at Crewe Alex in one of his first games on the list.

I'm not sure how many RTR contributors saw the post-match interview with the Derby manager, Paul Warne. I did and was impressed with what Paul said, including not trying to blame the ref or opposition for going down to 10 men or or the conditions or failing to get the win that his team would have expected to get at non-League Torquay. Some other managers may want to take note in my view!

Certainly much better than Hackett. Put me in mind of John Key or Norman Glover and from a later era David Crick

Or perhaps even a touch of Alf Buksh
